LeSean McCoy might not have played every snap in Sunday's win over the New York Jets, but the Buffalo Bills running back touched the ball 27 times and gained 159 of his team's 408 net offensive yards.

Based on his usage in Sunday's game, McCoy projects to receive 432 touches over a 16-game season. Since 2001, only five players -- Larry Johnson (457 touches in 2006), LaDainian Tomlinson (451 in 2002), DeMarco Murray (449 in 2014), Ricky Williams (442 in 2003) and Steven Jackson (436 in 2006) -- have totaled more carries and catches in a single season.

McCoy fans had a scare in the fourth quarter when he left the field and doubled over on the sideline. There were also a few incidents last season that put scares into owners. But McCoy insists his shifty running style will keep him healthy.

Veteran running back Steven Jackson played nine snaps in Sunday's loss to the New York Jets, and those numbers should be rising this week in the season finale against the Miami Dolphins.

"That will start just with the work week; Steven had really two days of practice last week so I think that it’s fair to say that we wanted to put him in a situation that was fair to him based on the preparation and the work that he had done prior to the game," offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said Tuesday. "This week will give us another three days of good work and experience and exposure to him, and for him to the offense, that will give us an opportunity to expand his role, hopefully during the course of the game on Sunday."

Jackson finished with seven carries for 15 yards against the Jets. A 7-yard run in the fourth quarter was arguably his best of the day.

At this point, it's all mostly about getting Jackson ready for the playoffs. The story went on to say if Jackson is worked more into the mix, it would give the coaching staff more flexibility to have Brandon Bolden return to some special-teams duties that he hasn't been a part of over the past two games. Jackson, 32, is further along than most players would be in his position after playing under McDaniels with the St. Louis Rams in 2011.

Help is coming for the Patriots' beleaguered running back corps.

The team is expected to sign veteran free agent Steven Jackson, ESPN and NFL Network reported.

Jackson, 32, is a veteran of nine seasons with the Rams and two with the Falcons. His 11,388 career rushing yards are second among active players and 17th all time.

Jackson worked out for the Patriots last week as they look to make up for the season-ending injuries to Dion Lewis and LeGarrette Blount.

Jackson could jump right in and have an impact, but would obviously be a risky fantasy play for Week 16 if this is your finals. Considering newly promoted Joey Iosefa led the Patriots in rushing with 51 yards in Sunday's win, Jackson could do just fine in this offense. Jackson likely will assume the role of Blount, as the inside runner, while James White remains the third down option. The team just doesn't seem to trust Brandon Bolden enough for a bigger role week-to-week.

The contest between RBs Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman should extend far beyond camp. Each has stated he plans on being the starter, and while they can share the load, something will eventually have to give.

Both appear to be schematic fits, and both have the potential to be effective in the NFL. Freeman displayed flashes of brilliance last year, his first in Atlanta; Coleman rushed for more than 2,000 as a senior at Indiana University.

With Steven Jackson out of the way, Freeman was expected to be the starter in 2015, but the drafting of Coleman appears to have changed that. Freeman was perhaps more successful in the passing game so he could have some PPR value, but it looks like there will at least be some kind of a timeshare. We rank Freeman 33rd and Coleman 38th on our RB list, but Coleman is actually going a round or two earlier in drafts as owners are buying into him as the eventual lead back.

Falcons RB Devonta Freeman is clearly ahead at running back. Freeman is the leader in the clubhouse to earn the No. 1 running back spot over rookie Tevin Coleman. His head is probably spinning with all of the new information to go along with the mild groin strain that kept him out of the final day of minicamp.

“I knew Devonta had terrific hands, but I probably didn’t appreciate the good route-running ability coming out of Florida State and the development he made with (former running backs coach) Gerald (Brown) and the guys here last year," said head coach Dan Quinn. "He can really run routes.”

Quinn stopped just short of declaring a winner in the position battle.

“He’s going to be a guy we’re going to feature in a lot of different ways,” Quinn said. “He’s tough. He’s got great quickness….He’s a factor for sure.”

With Steven Jackson out of the way, GM Thomas Dimitroff said that there was “no question” that Freeman is ready to be the feature back in Atlanta, though the team threw cold water on that notion by drafting Tevin Coleman. Freeman wasn't terribly impressive in his rookie season (248 yards rushing, 3.8 YPC), but he was active and effective in the passing game (30 catches for 225 yards), so we’re expecting he’ll be PPR-relevant as part of a timeshare.
