Mark Sanchez and the New York Jets' offense started slow and sputtered often.
Again.
Washington's Albert Haynesworth hasn't been happy with his situation, either. But it appeared the big defensive lineman was calling a bit of a truce with coach Mike Shanahan after the Redskins' 16-11 victory over Jets in a snoozer Friday night.
"I'm going over for dinner to his house, probably tonight," Haynesworth said. "We'll sit, have a cigar and talk. What I said last week is behind me. I don't even remember what I said."
Haynesworth, who missed numerous practices because of a failed conditioning test, a sore knee and then an illness, said Shanahan underplayed his medical condition.
Reports said Haynesworth was suffering from a muscle condition called rhabdomyolysis, but Shanahan told AOL Fanhouse last Sunday he was "not aware of that." Shanahan had given various reasons for Haynesworth's inability to practice, eventually attributing it to a headache.
Haynesworth complained about being out with the backups in the third quarter of Washington's 23-3 loss to Baltimore last week. He was on the field with the starters late in the opening quarter of this one.
"That's what they wanted to do this week, so I practiced a lot at end to get a feel for it," said Haynesworth, who entered the game with about 2 minutes left in the first quarter and finished with one tackle. "I still got a lot of work to do."
So do the Jets, whose late touchdown was only their second in three preseason games.
Far from the explosive offense many of the Jets predict they'll be, New York struggled until Sanchez connected with Dustin Keller for a 10-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter.
Larry Johnson, competing with Clinton Portis and Willie Parker for a spot in the backfield for the Redskins (2-1), caught a screen pass from Richard Bartel and rumbled 15 yards for the winning score with 2:13 left.
Looking to rebound from a poor performance against Carolina last weekend, the Jets (1-2) were hurt by four turnovers and missed opportunities.
Sanchez finished 13 of 21 for 139 yards and an interception in just over three quarters for the Jets.
Rex Grossman started for the injured Donovan McNabb for Washington, and went 8 of 16 for 111 yards. Without McNabb, who missed the game with a sprained left ankle, the Redskins' first-team offense couldn't do much against the Jets' starters on defense, but Washington still led in the fourth quarter.
After Graham Gano's third field goal of the game gave Washington a 9-5 lead with 6:46 left in the third quarter, Sanchez and the offense were given one more chance to get something going.
This time, they delivered. Finally.
Sanchez completed three third-down passes - a situation the Jets were only 1 of 7 until that point. On third-and-9 from the 20, running back LaDanian Tomlinson caught a 9-yard pass for a first down to end the third quarter.
After Shonn Greene's 1-yard run, Sanchez found tight end Dustin Keller over the middle, and Keller stretched the ball over the goal line to give New York the 11-9 lead with 14:18 left - but Nick Folk clunked the extra point attempt off the left upright.
Sanchez got the Jets down to the Redskins 13 midway through the second quarter, but made a bad throw intended for Keller that was intercepted by DeAngelo Hall.
Washington took advantage, converting the turnover into points with Gano's 42-yard field goal with 5:10 left that made it 6-3.
Right after the 2-minute warning, Grossman couldn't handle a shotgun snap that tipped off his hands and bounced into the end zone. The Redskins quarterback kicked the ball out of the back of the end zone for a safety - making it a 6-5.
Jets LB Calvin Pace suffered a foot injury and Ryan said he will likely miss a few weeks. Larry Johnson had 42 yards on nine carries, while Willie Parker got the start and had eight rushes for 16 yards.

K Nick Folk all but locked up the kicking job for the New York Jets in Saturday night's game against the Panthers, making field goals of 43, 36 and 49 yards. He was 3-for-3.

Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan offered unsolicited praise of PK Nick Folk, who, in case you haven't been paying attention, came to the New York Jets in the offseason after a debacle last season in Dallas. Folk did little to erase the concern in the minicamp and OTAs, performing erratically. But now, after three practices, Ryan all but demanded an end to the "Folk Watch."
"I want to go on record, I'm officially not worried about our Pro Bowl kicker," said Ryan, alluding to Folk's Pro Bowl season in Dallas (2007).
Should the multitude of Jets offensive weapons "gel," Folf could be a nice pick-up....late in the draft.

Wow, It's only May, and Rex Ryan said this of newly signed K Nick Folk: "Nick has to make a couple, or else we'll find another kicker."

The Cowboys signed Shaun Suisham on Monday to replace struggling kicker Nick Folk, who was released, according to a team source.

The kicking competition barely got off the ground before it became clear there will be no change this weekend.
Nick Folk's struggles have opened the door for rookie David Buehler to challenge for the job. But after Tuesday's practice – when Folk was 2-of-4 and Buehler was 1-of-4, all from 30 to 35 yards into a cold, brisk wind – coach Wade Phillips said Buehler is "a ways away" and presumes Folk will kick against New Orleans.
"The guy has been a good one and is young," Phillips said of Folk. "That makes me think he can come back if he's mentally strong enough. I've talked to him, and he seems to be that way.

And the Cowboys' new holder is ... Tony Romo?
The Cowboys new holder may be its former holder. In an attempt to reverse the downward spiral of kicker Nick Folk, the Cowboys used Romo in Wednesday's practice. He replaced punter Mat McBriar, who has mishandled two recent field goal attempts.
"We feel like we need to do something, whether it's the whole operation itself or some of the parts," coach Wade Phillips said. "We've got to get more confidence from our kicker. We need to do better. There is a possibility that we'll make a change."
Romo served as the Cowboys' holder in 2005 and 2006. His bobble on Martin Gramatica's 19-yard field goal try with 1:19 left cost the Cowboys a playoff win against Seattle in January 2007. Backup quarterback Brad Johnson was the holder last season.
After making 20 of 22 field goal attempts last season, Folk has missed five of his last seven. McBriar blamed two of those on him placing the ball forward, away from Folk.

Dallas Cowboys kicker Nick Folk has missed four of his last eight field-goal tries, but coach Wade Phillips continues to express confidence in him.
That is consistent with Phillips' coaching philosophy. While some members of the NFL coaching fraternity can barely tolerate kickers, Phillips has show extraordinary patience with them.
This is his eighth season as a full-fledged NFL head coach. In that time, Phillips has never made an in-season change at kicker. His teams have used only three kickers: Jason Elam with Denver, Steve Christie with Buffalo and Folk. By comparison, Bill Parcells went through five kickers in his last two seasons as the Cowboys' coach

K David Buehler, rising: The Cowboys drafted Buehler to take over kickoffs for field-goal kicker Nick Folk. Buehler is booming kickoffs so far in training camp; however, the Cowboys also hope to use the all-around athlete on punt coverage. At least that’s the hope. Buehler gets his first game audition Thursday when the Cowboys open the preseason at Oakland. "The first thing is to see how well he does in a game situation in his kicking and then go from there," coach Wade Phillips said.

For the first time since last season, Nick Folk handled some kickoffs Friday, and his surgically repaired right hip felt fine.
Folk had hip surgery in May and kicked on back-to-back days for the first time Thursday. Before Friday's practice, Folk made three field goal attempts from 51 yards, and two of his kickoffs reached the goal line.
"Everything's fine," Folk said. "It's getting there. It's a little sore, but that's to be expected. We've just got to push through it and take some breaks. But it's feeling better than it did all of last year."
