Childress wanted to bench QB Favre, but he refused

In the second half of a lopsided 26-7 loss to the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium. Favre claimed the coach wanted to take him out of the game to avoid taking any more punishment from Carolina's defense, which sacked him four times. In other words, Childress wanted to make sure Favre was healthy for the playoffs since earlier in the day the Vikings had officially clinched the NFC North division title. But Favre wanted to stay in.

"Brad wanted to go in a different direction. And I wanted to stay in the game," Favre said. "It's not 70-6, but we were up 7-6. I said I'm staying in the game. I'm playing."
