For all the great things he has done over his career -- winning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2011, being named NFL MVP in 2015, and redefining the league record book for running quarterbacks -- there are many reasons the Panthers likely won't bring Cam Newton back next season.

Among the reasons is the $19.1 million the team would save on the salary cap. Since losing the Super Bowl, Newton ranks 30th in Total QBR behind Andy Dalton, and ahead of Blake Bortles. Speaking of money, the team is also going to need to pay RB Christian McCaffrey sooner than later. And finally, Allen is 5-1 as Newton's replacement so far this season.

GM Marty Hurney said Newton has followed a program for the past seven weeks but still has pain in his foot. He added the path prescribed by the medical staff will likely take significant time for the injury to fully heal.

We reported before the Panthers bye week that Newton was about midway through his rehab according to the team, which came as a bit of a surprise. More recent reports suggest he's getting other opinions including surgery, which would end his season. It seems like Newton isn't close to a return and Allen will be the starter for the foreseeable future.

Cam Newton will remain on the sideline for the Panthers Week 9 against the Tennessee Titans, as Panthers head coach Ron Rivera announced on Monday that Newton is still not ready to play. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Rivera on Monday said Newton is "in the middle of his rehab," indicating he's still more than a week away from returning.

Allen and the Panthers suffered a loss for the first time since Allen took over. Playing against a tough 9er defense, Allen threw three interceptions, but it looks like he's going to get another chance in Week 9 as Newton won't be ready. It also leads us to believe Newton may not be ready for Week 10 either.

With the Panthers coming off their bye week, Ron Rivera announced Monday that Kyle Allen will start for the fifth consecutive game this weekend at the San Francisco 49ers.

The Panthers said we wouldn't see Newton (foot sprain) until he's 100%, but this could very well be due to a potential tough matchup against the 49ers and the team sticking with Allen who has started four-straight games, all of the wins. The story said the Panthers are averaging 31.2 points per game with Allen under center.

Ron Rivera said he would not confirm that Cam Newton will practice next week.

Rivera said he has not received word from trainers that Newton is ready to practice. He emphasized there is no pressure on Newton to return. As Rivera has said, he doesn't plan to play Newton until he is 100%. The way Allen has played, Rivera and company maybe aren't in any hurry to rush back Newton at this point.

The Panthers have said they will make a QB determination when Newton is healthy; that looks to be coming soon, Schefter said. As we reported earlier today, some who follow the team feel that sticking with Allen, who has won every game in his four starts, might be the way to go. The Panthers said Newton won't play until he's 100%.

A few weeks ago, Ron Rivera said it was Cam Newton's job when he returned, but the ninth-year coach wasn't ready to discuss hypotheticals after Carolina's latest win.

"Quite honestly, I don't answer the question," Rivera said. "I'm not going to worry, speculate on anything until I have to address that. Until then, we're going to stay in the now, focus on what we're doing right now. Again, as far as I'm concerned, we're just not going to deal with the question until it's time. ... (Newton) is in his rehab program, doing his program. Our quarterback right now that has been playing for us is Kyle Allen. We're not going to address it."

Even Rivera probably didn't expect Allen to come in and proceed to win every game thus far. The Panthers have a bye this week and it was thought Newton would return after that. Rivera said Newton wouldn't play until he was 100% healthy.
