IDP Waiver Wire Pickups For Week 9

Keep an eye on the news - I'll keep this updated if any major trade happens that opens up playing time for a defender. Two trades happened that have impacted the linebacker position - Kwon Alexander and Avery Williamson. You can read my thoughts here in my three-down article.

Not many injuries this past week. Nathan Gerry landed on IR and should miss the next few weeks. Kamal Martin landed on the COVID reserve list, so he is out this week. If you're looking for depth, I've got some IDP suggestions for you, as always.

As we look ahead to Week 9, here are the IDPs I'm suggesting to target on your waiver wire this week.

Linebacker

TJ Edwards, LB, Philadelphia Eagles

Edwards' seemed to make more impact plays in his 62 snaps against Dallas than Nate Gerry has made over the entire season. He made a solid tackle on Ezekiel Elliott. He remained patient and went around the blockers and tackled him for a three-yard loss. He also made another tackle which prevented a first-down, as Elliott got through the line and Edwards made a tackle on Elliott's legs. He missed just one tackle and finished with 12 on the night. Although he's appeared in 180 defensive snaps, he's producing a 15.5% tackle rate and looks to get the majority of snaps alongside Alex Singleton with Gerry on IR for the next few weeks after the bye.

Kyle Van Noy, LB, Miami Dolphins

After missing the game before their bye, Van Noy has taken back play-calling responsibilities from Jerome Baker. He could be on your wire after a few single-digit fantasy performances and being inactive in Week 6. KVN turned in a well-rounded performance in Week 8, recording nine tackles, two defended passes, and a fumble recovery. He plays the majority of his snaps on the edge as a stand-up LB. His tackles will be inconsistent, making him a target in big-play scoring formats. In six games, he's had 108 pass-rush snaps and is generating a 13% pressure rate, which has resulted in two sacks and 14 total QB pressures.

Blake Cashman, LB, New York Jets

Cashman was inactive in Week 8 with a hamstring injury, however, snaps may have opened up. The Jets did Avery Williamson a favor as he goes from a team with a zero in the win column to one with a zero in the loss column. Williamson is now a Pittsburgh Steeler. I have to imagine the Jets feel Cashman's injury isn't serious and could return this week. This is a pick-up for potential volume and, honestly, if he stays healthy and performs over the next few weeks, I'd try and flip him. Once he returns, he should play the majority of the snaps alongside Neville Hewitt.

Bobby Okereke, LB, Indianapolis Colts

Okereke received the majority of the snaps with Darius Leonard out, but he was getting the usage when Leonard was on the field. Anthony Walker has been ceding snaps on packages to Okereke over the last several weeks. He's had four straight games of seven or more tackles and is generating an 11% tackle rate this season. He made a nice play from the edge where he broke off a block from T.J. Hockensen and tackled DeAndre Swift for a five-yard loss. On another Swift tackle for loss, he stood up the fullback into Swift and got the stop. Okereke was also a step short of sacking Matthew Stafford. He's quick and shows up on the field, making impact plays. When Leonard is active, Okereke is out snapping Walker almost 2:1. Okereke is the guy to own opposite Leonard. Hold Walker in dynasty - he becomes an FA at the end of 2020.

Krys Barnes, LB, Green Bay Packers

Barnes played in 94% of the snaps and called the plays in Week 8. Kamal Martin landed on the COVID list and is out this week. With Christian Kirksey still not activated, Barnes should see all of the snaps he can handle this week. He's coming off a lackluster four-tackle game in Week 8, but is producing an insane 21.7% tackle rate resulting in 47 tackles. I like the matchup this week against the 49ers - they are allowing 22 tackles and a sack per game to the LB position this season. I like Barnes as a plug-n-play LB3 this week.
