Final Thoughts for the Last Draft Weekend

Here are a few things I’ve noticed over the past couple of weeks of intense – yes, intense – drafting:

QB Depth - It’s entirely feasible to wait until the 10th, 11th or even 12th round and still get a very good quarterback. I’ve been waiting until this range and have always been able to nab Russell Wilson, Jay Cutler or Colin KaepernickPhilip Rivers is the safety net and if that doesn’t work, there’s always a QBBC with Carson PalmerAlex Smith should also be good if Travis Kelce proves to be a viable option at tight end… Even with all the depth, it makes sense to nab a top 3 passer in the 4th if one slips that far.

RG3’s Struggles - I’m steering clear of Robert Griffin III. I’ve been low on him all offseason (poor play last year, knee, new offense, etc.) and his woeful preseason play has not changed my mind. He does have a great receiving corps and could turn it around during the regular season. With all the depth at QB, there’s no need to take a chance on him in the middle rounds.

Yes, Please - Nick Foles in the 8th round all day long.

Early Round Tight Ends - Rob Gronkowski is going in the 2nd or 3rd round. It sounds as if he’s going to play Week 1, though there are no guarantees. He’s a stud when he plays, but his injury history is downright frightening, and not for the weak-hearted. If he plays a full season, he just might win your league for you. I haven’t been drafting him much, instead targeting Jimmy Graham in the 1st, opting for Julius Thomas in the 3rd, or nabbing one of the big tier of tight ends in the #4-#9 range. The 7th/8th round is a good place to land one of those guys… I’m still not touching Vernon Davis at his 6th round price tag.
