Since being acquired from the WR Braylon Edwards, Edwards has 13 catches for 192 yards and two touchdowns, including a three-yarder against the Dolphins in Week 8 in which he fought through two defenders to get into the end zone.
‘‘For me, it was a statement of my will and determination,’’ Edwards said Monday. ‘‘It’s a new attitude I have playing football. Being in a place where I’m happy and comfortable, that’s the kind of effort and desire that I have for this team.
‘‘Those are the plays that I want to continue to make to show these guys that I belong and that I’m happy I’m here. I really like this situation. I like the organization from top-to-bottom. I like the city. I’m trying to do everything I can to prove who I am and I’m the guy that they need.’’
At 6-3, 215 pounds, Edwards is the big receiver the Jets have long coveted. But off-the-field issues have clouded his career. He is currently charged with misdemeanor assault from an incident outside a Cleveland nightspot last month.
This offseason, Edwards, only 26, is expected to seek the same long-term deal he wanted in Cleveland, reportedly $9 million per season. But like running back Leon Washington, he’ll be a restricted free agent, not unrestricted, after the season minus a new Collective Bargaining Agreement.
