Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith said Sunday night he didn't feel like he was “an asset” to the team, but coach John Fox disagreed with him Monday.

Smith was grouchy in the wake of the Panthers' 28-21 win at Tampa Bay, primarily because he was limited to one catch for 4 yards, and that came on the final drive of the game.
“It's bittersweet,” Smith said quietly as he headed for the shower Sunday. “We get the win, but I have a limited role. So, obviously, I see this game as showing I'm no longer an asset to this team.”

“That's all I got,” he added after a follow-up question. “My name's Steve Smith and I stand by that.”

Fox's reply during his Monday news conference was that Smith had a huge hand in the game, simply by being doubled, which partially allowed the Panthers to run for 267 yards.

“I haven't had a chance to visit with Steve, but I think the fact that they double him every play is an asset,” Fox said. “That would be my impression.”
