Amphetamines in a medicine designed to combat attention...

Amphetamines in a medicine designed to combat attention deficit disorder caused New England rookie linebacker Brandon Spikes to test positive for performance enhancers.

Spikes, suspended Friday by the NFL for the remainder of the regular season, said in a statement Friday, "The substance was a medication that I should have gotten clarification on before taking. It was not a performance enhancer or an illegal drug. The integrity of the game is very important to me. I understand the league’s ruling and apologize to my teammates, the fans and the Patriots organization for this mistake."

Adderall, a common drug used in the treatment of ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), contains amphetamines which are listed as a performance enhancer by the NFL.

It's not known whether Spikes was taking Adderall specifically or a similar medication.
