Schefter: Jets to name QB Geno Smith the starter

Jets plan to name Geno Smith their new starting QB today, per league sources.

Related players: Ryan Fitzpatrick, Brandon Marshall, Quincy Enunwa

Fantasy Impact:

In 30 games in 2013 and 2014, Smith averaged 186 yards passing (6.6 YPA) with 0.83 TD and 1.13 INT. He completed 57.5% of his passes, while also showing an ability as a runner (20 rushing yards with 0.23 rush TD per game). Since he lost the job, he has appeared twice over the past two years, completing 31 of 48 passes (64.6%) with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also rushed three times for 36 yards. In his career, his receivers have averaged 1.45 fantasy points (PPR) per pass attempt, which is similar to Fitzpatrick's career 1.52 FP/PA and better than the 1.35 FP/PA that Fitzpatrick has posted this season. (For reference, Fitzpatrick posted a 1.62 FP/PA in 2015.) So while a quarterback change is not ideal for Brandon Marshall or Quincy Enunwa, Smith's career numbers are better than what Fitzpatrick was generating in 2016. If Smith continues to connect on more than 60% of his passes and can run the ball, he could work his way into the streaming conversation.
