NFL Supplemental Draft this afternoon

The NFL’s supplemental draft will take place via email at 1 p.m. today, with teams submitting bids on the six players deemed eligible. This draft is conducted in such a low-key fashion that teams even don’t know the draft order until about 30 minutes before it begins. There’ll be no grand announcements when the picks are made.

Terrelle Pryor leads the list of names that also includes: Western Carolina cornerback Torez Jones, Georgia running back Caleb King, Lindenwood University/Allen Wranglers (IFL) defensive end Keenan Mace, and North Carolina defensive end Michael McAdoo.

The draft began in 1977 as way to help players whose college eligibility had changed, usually because of suspensions or academic difficulties, after the regular April draft. Occasionally — emphasis on occasionally — a team has landed a gem, like Cris Carter.

Fantasy Impact:

It's unlikely any of these names make a fantasy impact this year, but it's an interesting read if you're a fan of drafting in any capacity - which if you're reading this we assume you are...

Teams essentially bid draft picks in what is similar to a silent auction. So if Team A bids a 4th round pick on Pryor and has the highest bid, they will lose their 4th round pick in the April 2012 draft.

The draft order is also tiered, diving teams into three groups. So just because the Panthers had the first pick this past April, it doesn't mean they will have it for the Supplemental Draft.
