Panthers QB Cam Newton will not play Sunday against the Cardinals because of a foot injury. Kyle Allen will get the start.

This was the expected news after Newton did not practice Wednesday and Thursday. Kyle Allen will get the start against the Cardinals and it is certainly a downgrade across the board, save for Christian McCaffrey. Expect him to continue to get a healthy does, if not more than he already has this season. Allen played in two regular season games last season, including a Week 17 win against the Saints, though most of the Saints’ backups played in that game.

After a poor Week 2, nobody will be surprised if Cam Newton sits against Arizona. Kyle Allen would get the start and has some value against an uptempo and bad Arizona Cardinals defense, but Allen will also hurt the upside of the Panthers skill position players.

Ron Rivera said Cam Newton, who suffered a left midfoot sprain in the third preseason game at New England, reported foot soreness after the loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday Night Football.

Per Rivera, Newton underwent treatment over the weekend, and the coach and quarterback met again Tuesday morning to reassess.

“He was low about it, he really was. He wants to compete so badly,” Rivera said.

“It’s tough. He wants to be out there for his teammates. I appreciate our conversation. He was very honest and he was up-front about it. He said he’s going to do everything he can. We’ll see what happens.”

If Newton can’t go, Rivera confirmed that Allen will step in as the starting quarterback. Allen appeared in the final two regular season games last season, leading Carolina to a 33-14 road win over the Saints as the starter in the finale. Rivera said Allen is "more than ready." Some who follow the team feel a healthy Allen is a better option right now than a banged up Newton. Carolina plays at Arizona in Week 3.

Panthers quarterback Kyle Allen suffered a shoulder injury and has been ruled out against the Saints.

Gilbert took over for Allen who playing for Heinicke who was injured last week. Of course Heinicke took over for Cam Newton after Newton was shut down because of a shoulder injury.
