Running back Marion Barber has retired from the NFL, the Chicago Bears announced Friday.

The 28-year-old spent his first six seasons with the Dallas Cowboys before joining the Bears for the 2011 season. On 1,156 carries, Barber rushed for 4,780 yards and 53 touchdowns in seven seasons. He was a fourth-round pick out of Minnesota in 2005, led the NFL in rushing touchdowns in 2006 (14) and made the Pro Bowl in 2007.

"I want to thank everyone who helped me become a better player," Barber said in a statement provided by the team. "I owe a lot to a lot of coaches, and am also very grateful to the owners and organizations I played for. Last but not least, I want to thank the fans for the support and inspiration they gave me."
