Purdue to Win the National Championship

Purdue was one of my preseason favorites to win the 2022 National Championship. They returned the majority of their core from last year's team, including the intimidating interior duo of 7-foot-4 center Zach Edey (14.5 PPG, 7.9 RPG) and 6-foot-10 versatile forward Trevion Williams (11.9 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 3.1 APG). They also returned explosive guard Jaden Ivey (17.6 PPG, 4.9 RPG), who enjoyed a tremendous summer at the FIBA U19 World Cup. Despite all this talent, the Boilermakers faded as a public favorite to win the title as a direct result of defensive struggles.

Purdue entered the tournament ranked just 100th overall in adjusted defensive efficiency, per KenPom. This was quite a drop-off from last year's 34th overall rank and a substantial decrease from 11th overall in 2019. Head coach Matt Painter seemed to struggle with playing the two dominant bigs together, creating an inconsistency on the late-game rotation. However, Purdue has now found themselves in the Sweet 16, without a No. 1 or No. 2 seed in their path to Painter's first Final Four.

Despite the defensive concerns, the Boilermakers still boast one of the best offenses in the country and could find a favorable Final Four draw with Gonzaga or Duke. A strong defensive team would be the Boilermakers' kryptonite, as they demonstrated in regular-season losses to Rutgers and Michigan State. However, their unique size inside, Ivey's greatness, and a tremendous PropSwap value make this a ticket worth strong consideration.

They have a solid point guard in Al Durham, who makes free throws at an 84.4% clip, a solid interior presence in Nate Watson (13.5 PPG, 3.5 RPG), a clutch shooter in Jared Bynum (41.7% 3P), and a great defender in Justin Minaya. Sprinkle in the ultimate "glue guy" in Nate Horchler (9.8 PPG, 8.8 RPG, 41% 3P), and this team has all the necessary ingredients for a championship roster.
