Austin Ekeler had 164 yards and a touchdown in Week 1 even though he left early with a high-ankle sprain. He returned in Week 6 and had a run of big games from Week 8 to Week 10, gaining 308 total yards and scoring four touchdowns in that stretch. In his last eight games, he only cleared 75 total yards twice, finishing as the RB29 for the year and the RB23 on a per-game basis. As he enters his age-29 season, he's unlikely to wrest the early-down role from Brian Robinson, but he's likely to operate as the primary pass-catcher out of the Washington backfield.

Veteran RB Austin Ekeler is signing with the Commanders on a two-year deal worth up to $11.43 million.

Fantasy Impact:

The Brian Robinson bellcow role lasted about two hours, but the Commanders backs have company now. Ekeler had clearly lost a step last season, but a veteran pass-catching presence in the backfield will be an obvious plus. Ekeler should carve out a role that puts him in RB2 conversation, while Robinson holds onto a goal-line role that makes him almost as fantasy viable.

Week 2 vs New York Giants

Austin Ekeler enjoyed a quiet debut for the Commanders in Week 1 against the Buccaneers. Ekeler carried the ball twice for 10 yards and caught all four of his targets for 52 yards. He finished as the RB34 with 8.2 Half PPR points.

The Giants let the Vikings RBs do what they wanted in Week 1, allowing 108 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground along with seven receptions (from seven targets) for another 51 yards. Still, Ekeler seems to be behind Brian Robinson in the pecking order, and with Jayden Daniels taking a bulk of the rushing work too, Ekeler might have to rely on efficiency rather than volume. He's a low-end RB3 this week.
