With the ever-effective James Conner in the fold, this is not the ideal landing spot for the second running back off the board, though the Cardinals could be planning to move on from the 29-year-old sooner rather than later. (Conner is in the final year of his contract.) Benson certainly has the talent and versatility to win the RB1 job and if he does, he'll be in the RB2 mix playing alongside Kyler Murray. He’ll be one of the top attrition RB2 picks this season.

For those thinking the RB2 battle was firmly between Michael Carter and rookie Trey Benson, Emari Demercado has something to say.

Throughout camp, Demercado has been a common occurrence subbing in for starter James Conner during first-team work.

Fantasy Impact:

It’s only been one day of pads, the story went on to say, but Demercado's pass-protecting ability, which earned him valuable playing time as a rookie, has been on display early on. The story went on to say keeping Murray upright is crucial to a successful season, and it’s clear the Cardinals are liking what Demercado is bringing to the table so far. It went on to say behind Conner and Demercado, Carter got first crack at second-team reps, with rookie Trey Benson subbing in for the veteran. Given the draft capital the team paid for Benson, it should only be a matter of time before he starts to make a move up the depth chart.

Trey Benson landed in an ascending offense, which is reason for optimism, but on paper, his role as a backup is mostly solidified. James Conner has been one of the most efficient rushers in the league despite his age and is very unlikely to lose his job unless he misses an extended period of time. Here in Week 2, Benson can be left on benches in all but the deepest leagues.
