Ronnie Brown was among the Chargers inactives. Running back Curtis Brinkley got the nod over the veteran, who entered the game ranking second on the team with nine catches for 52 yards.

Fantasy Impact: 

Jackie Battle started the season lowest on the depth chart with Brown as the starter. But Battle had a big game in Week 2 garbage time and then added a big run last week. Brinkley and Battle would likely share work if Ryan Mathews would go down again to injury.

Fantasy Impact: 

Ronnie Brown is in line to be the starter in Week 1 against the Raiders, but a host of other backs like Curtis Brinkley, Jackie Battle and LeRon McClain could also get work. We rank Brown 15th among RBs, so we feel good he's a pretty solid RB2 in most leagues.

Ryan Mathews breaks collarbone, out 4-6 weeks

San Diego Chargers starting running back Ryan Mathews will undergo surgery Friday morning for a broken collarbone.

Mathews was injured on his first carry of the preseason in the first quarter of Thursday night's game against the Green Bay Packers. Coach Norv Turner has said he'll be out four to six weeks.

Fantasy Impact: 

A four to six week timetable has Mathews returning within the first few weeks of the season. The Chargers have a wealth of unspectacular options behind Ryan Mathews in Ronnie Brown, Curtis Brinkley, Jackie Battle and LeRon McClain. We doubt any one back will take on a featured role as was the plan for Mathews. First round running back options are getting thinner by the day.

San Diego RB Jackie Battle, 28, spent the first five years of his career with the Chiefs. The bulk of his playing time on offense came last season when he had 149 carries for 597 yards and two touchdowns. He also had nine catches for 68 yards.

"We were in the market for a running back," General Manager A.J. Smith said. "We've been talking to Jackie Battle for a while. We think he's an outstanding player. He's been added for depth. We feel he has triple value. He is an outstanding special teamer. He's also a good running back and can help us at fullback."
