Bengals RB Joe Mixon (calf) was added to the injury report Thursday after taking limited practice reps. Mixon's calf issue is worth monitoring since it's a new injury and the Bengals face the Dolphins this week, meaning that Giovani Bernard would be in a smash spot if Mixon were unable to play. Owners (with or without Mixon) may want to add Bernard just in case.
Mixon is day-to-day, meaning he has a chance to suit up for Week 2, but he'll likely miss some practice this week. The Bengals play an early game in Week 2, hosting the 49ers. Bernard would be the team's RB1 if Mixon can't go.
The team announced during the third quarter that Mixon's return was questionable but he never returned. The story added Mixon was seen walking into the Bengals' locker room with about three minutes left in the quarter. If Mixon misses games, Bernard would see an increase in time and Williams now becomes a factor as well.
Bernard gets a raise to $5.9 million this year and $11M over two, including a $600K guaranteed bonus due in March. Locking up a team leader and playmaker through 2021, the tweet went on to say. Bernard will serve as a change of pace and third down back as long as Mixon is healthy.
