Jets hope RB La'Mical Perine just has ankle sprain

Jets rookie running back La’Mical Perine had to be carted off the MetLife Stadium field and into the locker room after suffering a left ankle injury on Sunday.

Adam Gase said Perine would undergo an MRI. The Jets are hoping it’s only a sprain and there’s nothing structurally wrong with Perine’s ankle.

Fantasy Impact:

Perine has been having a good camp, impressing the coaches with his quickness and ability to hit holes. He was slated as the No. 3 back behind Bell and Gore. Now they have a lack of running back depth. The Jets acquired Kalen Ballage from Miami for a conditional seven-round pick. But that trade was voided Sunday because Ballage failed his physical. Running back Josh Adams remains out with a hamstring injury.

The Dolphins may not get anything for Kalen Ballage after all.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the running back failed his physical with the Jets Sunday because of a hamstring injury, negating the trade the division rivals made last week.

It looked like a bit of an overstock situation for the Jets anyway, but they suddenly need a body. According to Rich Cimini of ESPN.com, rookie running back La’Mical Perine went down with an ankle injury today, and was carted off the field.

Fantasy Impact:

The Jets RB situation is getting as ugly as the WR situation. We had a story today that mini-feud between Bell and Gase could be heating up. Gore seems like he's the back trending in the right direction in this offense that may go with a committee approach at RB despite those who follow the team saying Bell needs about 20 touches a game to be most effective. Suddenly, Gore and Bell are now the lone healthy backs.

Stealing a title from the old movie, let's call it "Three Men and a Baby." The three veterans are LeVeon Bell, Frank Gore and newcomer Kalen Ballage, who, like, Gore, played under coach Adam Gase with the Miami Dolphins. The rookie is La'Mical Perine, who already has caught the attention of his coach.

Fantasy Impact:

Bell remains the best back on the team despite a poor 2019 season, but Gase's well-documented affinity for Gore and his preference for a running back-by-committee are reasons to believe this could get messy. We've already seen the warning signs, with last week's hamstring dispute. It resulted in a long sitdown between Bell and Gase, who admitted Saturday he was "caught off guard a little bit" by Bell's Twitter rant about being pulled from a midweek intrasquad scrimmage. The story went on to say Gase claimed they're in a good place after the chat. Gase already is on record as saying he wants to reduce Bell's workload, but Bell is a volume runner, meaning he's at his best when he's getting 20-plus carries a game, the story said. There have been reports for quite a while that Gore is going to get his share of the workload this season.

"I know Le’Veon Bell is the all-pro, highest-paid, big-play guy with the all-world reputation, but the Jets are getting far more production out of Gore," wrote Connor Hughes of The Athletic.

Hughes makes it clear that Le'Veon Bell is the better talent in the Jets backfield, but Frank Gore is a better fit for the offense. Bell continues to "dance" in the backfield and defenses are closing in on him.

Fantasy Impact:

The Jets backfield is a mess. Frank Gore leading a backfield at 37 years old is an issue and further indication to avoid all backs in that group.
