The Jets announced the previously reported signing of Donte Moncrief on Monday morning and they also announced the release of kicker Brett Maher.
Maher signed a future contract with the Jets after the end of the 2019 regular season and joined Sam Ficken as the team’s options at kicker. Ficken spent most of last season in that role and is now set to open this season in the same role.
The Jets are banged up at WR and thus the signing of Moncrief. But, the move means the kicking job now belongs to Ficken.
Moncrief has struggled all season and making this move at this point of the season allowed the Steelers to get back their third-round compensatory pick for losing LeVeon Bell, so this move was expected. Brooks-James at least gives the Steelers a third running back with Benny Snell and James Conner both likely out against the Colts. Trey Edmonds is the only other back currently available behind Jayden Samuels, who should see plenty of work Sunday.
