Draft note
by John Paulsen
Waller is back after a one-year retirement and lands in a potentially useful spot as the likely “move” tight end in Mike McDaniel's offense—a role that allowed Jonnu Smith to post TE4 numbers in 2024. Waller last played in 2023, where he caught 52 passes for 552 yards and a touchdown in 12 games, finishing as the TE14 on a per-game basis. He still has some weekly upside given his athleticism and history of production, but durability is a major concern—he’s played just 32 games in his last three active seasons and hasn’t suited up for more than 12 games since 2020. At this stage of his career, Waller is best viewed as a spot-start option for those employing a tight end streaming or committee strategy. Fantasy managers should not plan to rely on him every week, but he could be a useful part-time contributor when healthy.

NYG TE Darren Waller - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Los Angeles Rams

Darren Waller caught two balls for 32 yards last week against the Eagles. Waller has been getting targets - averages 6.2 per game this year - but he just isn’t producing. He has just three double-digit half-PPR fantasy performances this year and only one touchdown all season. The Giants offense hasn’t been good enough to sustain fantasy pass-catchers, and Waller just hasn’t been able to be an exception to that.

This week, Waller faces a Rams defense that ranks eighth in aFPA to opposing tight ends. He gets enough targets to warrant fantasy consideration, but he’s a risky, fringe-starter in most leagues. Expect a high level of variance for the veteran, and fantasy managers should hold their breath if forced to start him.
