Draft note
by John Paulsen
The fear heading into 2020 was that Waller’s targets would drop due to the arrival of Henry Ruggs and Bryan Edwards, but they increased from 117 to 145. He is far and away the No. 1 target for his team. The Raiders replaced Nelson Agholor with John Brown, who might be a better receiver but isn’t a high-volume player.

LV TE Darren Waller - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Darren Waller was a dominant fantasy tight end last year, putting up his second consecutive 1,000-plus-yard season and catching 107 of 145 targets. He was tied with Travis Kelce for the most targets among TE’s and fourth-most among all players. Waller also found the end zone nine times, a great sign after scoring just three touchdowns in 2019. The Raiders should continue to lean on him heavily going into 2021, and it seems like he’s just hitting his prime.

Fantasy Downside

There really isn’t any downside to Waller. Barring injury, there’s no reason to expect his targets to decrease. The Raiders replaced Nelson Agholor with John Brown and added Kenyan Drake, but neither of those moves seems like a huge threat to Waller. I guess since he’ll be 29 years old in September already, we could see some sort of a decline due to age. Perhaps, but I don’t think we’re quite there yet with Waller. Even a touchdown regression won’t take him out of contention for TE2 behind Kelce.

2021 Bottom Line

Waller will cost you a late-second rounder in most drafts, but he’s worth the price considering the volume that comes his way. If you can add one of those elite three tight ends to your roster in the late-second or early-third round, then you’re off to an excellent start in all formats.
