Draft note
by John Paulsen
Henderson and Cam Akers have been “splitting the first-team snaps pretty evenly so far,” per The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue. Rams HC Sean McVay said, “I look at is as we’ve got two starting backs. … They need to be on the field. I think it’s healthy for them to be able to supplement one another.” It sounds as if McVay is seriously considering a backfield committee, which is not something that he typically implements. Maybe he’s hedging his bet on Akers after his Achilles injury. Henderson was the starter for the first 11 games and was the fantasy RB12 through Week 12, so he’s a proven producer when he’s given a big workload.

LAR RB Darrell Henderson - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Darrell Henderson produced the overall RB19 season in PPR league last year. Projected as the backup to Cam Akers, Henderson became the starter after Akers suffered a season-ending Achilles tear in the preseason. Using his 4.49 speed, Henderson started the season with five consecutive RB2 or better stat lines, with five total touchdowns. His nine breakaway runs ranked Top 12 at the position and his eight total touchdowns ended the season in the Top 20. If Cam Akers stumbles to start the season, Henderson has certainly proved capable of solid RB2 or Flex production in all fantasy formats.

2022 Fantasy Downside
Henderson was good, but not great, despite serving as the lead back in one of the NFL’s best offenses. He featured straight line speed but ranked only 49th in Juke Rate, struggling to make defenders miss (PlayerProfiler). Henderson is a limited factor in the passing attack, averaging just 2.4 receptions per game. His fantasy relevance is limited with Akers again the team’s leading RB.

2022 Bottom Line
Henderson is again an injury away from fantasy relevance, and lacks the standalone value of other RB2s such as Tony Pollard (Dallas) and Michael Carter (Jets). He is an explosive player in the perfect setting, but is nothing more than a bench-stash insurance policy as long as Akers is on the field.
