PIT WR Chase Claypool - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
After a rookie year where he showed some promise, Chase Claypool continues to give Steelers fans hope he can be a legitimate threat all over the field. He now has 121 receptions for 1,633 yards over his first two seasons and will get every opportunity to be the No. 2 receiver in the passing game. With JuJu Smith-Schuster now in KC, Claypool is next up.

2022 Fantasy Downside
Claypool's numbers actually went slightly down last year from his rookie season. After scoring 9 touchdowns in 2020, he only scored two last season. Claypool also had mental and physical breakdowns. Some have questioned his game IQ and also his ability to stay on his feet which seems strange for someone as athletic as he is. Claypool will also have second-round pick George Pickens looking over his shoulder.

2022 Bottom Line
This will be a pivotal season for Claypool. Will he mature and put up legitimate No. 2 type numbers or will he regress? Heading into 2022, Claypool should be on your roster as your fourth receiver. He is getting drafted too early in some drafts because of all the exposure and hype from his rookie season. Don't overreach on him because the floor is more likely than the ceiling.

PIT WR Chase Claypool - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs Browns

Our own Jennifer Eakins named Chase Claypool as a player who is dead weight and should be considered as droppable. And Jennifer is great at her job, so when he mentions someone as dead weight, there's a reason for it. Claypool has been very inconsistent and only has one touchdown this season and that was in Week 5. The Steelers have been force-feeding Diontae Johnson and Najee Harris. Claypool has taken a backseat to them in the offense. He's a tough sell for the fantasy finals.

PIT WR Chase Claypool - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs Chiefs

If you looked at the Steelers box score from last week, yes you are reading that correctly. Chase Claypool has 12 yards on zero catches. Yes, zero. That's because he received a handoff from Ray-Ray McCloud after a forward pass to McCloud from Ben Roethlisberger. But it was Claypool who got credit for the yards. Still, Claypool only totaled 19 yards last week and is facing another tough matchup in the Chiefs this week. He's also only been hovering around 60 percent of snaps over the last three weeks. His upside is limited, but he's still a flex option because he can explode on one play for a big fantasy day.

PIT WR Chase Claypool - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs Titans

Chase Claypool seems to be over his injuries. In his last four games, he has at least 80 yards receiving and is coming off an eight-catch game against the Vikings in Week 14. And that was with playing just 44 of 74 snaps. With the Steelers coming alive a bit on offense, even in limited action, a healthy Claypool as Pittsburgh's WR2 can provide very good value as your flex in the playoffs. Hopefully he can finally add to his touchdown total this week too.

PIT WR Chase Claypool - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs Vikings

Chase Claypool caught two passes for 52 yards against the Ravens. But he now dealing with a toe injury, just the latest in a line of injuries for Claypool this season. He would have been listed as a non-participant in practice on Monday, so he's questionable for this week. If he is able to go, it's a really good matchup against the Vikings, whose defense looks like a shell of its former self.

PIT WR Chase Claypool - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs Ravens

Chase Claypool has had a nice little stretch since missing the tie game against the Lions. In his last two games, he's seen 17 targets and caught eight of them and posted totals of 93 and 82 yards. Can he keep it going against the Ravens? It's actually not a bad matchup. Baltimore is 21st in our defense rankings against opposing fantasy wide receivers. A third-straight double-digit fantasy day is well within reach.

PIT WR Chase Claypool - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs Bengals

Chase Claypool finally got back in his groove last week against the Chargers. Injuries had been limiting him, but he looked good last week to the tune of 93 yards on five catches, his most since Week 5. His fantasy owners should remember his first game against the Bengals this season. Nice catches for 96 yards. He played all but six snaps in Week 11. He looks healthy again. Could he be back on the upswing? The Steelers sure could use him this week in a game with huge AFC playoff implications. He sits just inside our top 30 wide receivers for the week.
