Scouting report

HOU WR Cecil Shorts - 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
While Cecil Shorts will face competition for playing time from wide receivers Jaelen Strong, Will Fuller and Braxton Miller, the Houston Chronicle believes the former Jaguars starter will have a solid role in the fall. "Cecil is a guy that’s going to go out there and give you his all," teammate DeAndre Hopkins said of Shorts, who's caught 218 career passes for 2,827 yards and 14 touchdowns in five NFL seasons. "Even if he’s hurt, he’s going to go out there. You’ll have to tell him to go on the sideline and get checked out. He’s a hard worker. He definitely makes me go out there and work harder every day. He doesn’t complain about anything, even if he’s not getting the ball. He goes out there and he does his role to the best he can.”

Fantasy Downside
Hopkins' "even if he's hurt" comment might as well be "even when he's hurt." Shorts' initial season with the Texans was productive enough, but more could have been achieved if not for nagging injuries. Shorts caught 42 passes for 484 yards and two touchdowns last season. However, hamstring issues and a dislocated shoulder limited him to 11 games and four starts. Shorts caught 22 passes in the first four games before missing four games.

2016 Bottom Line
Yes, Fuller and Miller were drafted to provide more play-making firepower. But Bill O'Brien's offense isn't necessarily rookie-friendly (Strong would certainly agree with that). Shorts isn't likely to be a highly-sought after commodity on draft day, but he could emerge as a solid bye-week filler or reasonably-priced DFS play as we move into the regular season.

HOU WR Cecil Shorts - Week 18, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 18 vs. Kansas City
After being out since Week 15 with a hamstring injury, Cecil Shorts has a chance to be on the field on Saturday. He’s given the offense a spark when healthy, but you’re better off finding another WR for the playoffs. In September versus Kansas City, Shorts caught four passes for 57 yards.

HOU WR Cecil Shorts - Week 17, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Jacksonville
Battling a sore hamstring, Cecil Shorts was held out of last week’s win at Tennessee. Shorts caught four passes for 63 yards in the October win at Jacksonville; but, if he’s healthy enough to be on the field in the rematch, should be considered no more than a WR3.

HOU WR Cecil Shorts - Week 16, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Tennessee
With T.J. Yates and Brandon Weeden at QB last week at Indy, Cecil Shorts was held without a catch and left with an injured groin. Shorts missed the previous meeting against the Titans this season and is likely to miss the rematch as well.

HOU WR Cecil Shorts - Week 15, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Indianapolis
In the loss to New England last week, Cecil Shorts had only two grabs for nine yards and two wildcat formation runs that went nowhere. Houston’s offense was held to under 250 total yards, as DeAndre Hopkins was double-teamed for most of the night and the rest of the WRs had trouble shaking defenders. Shorts was inactive against the Colts in October and, with T.J. Yates at QB, should only be started if you’re limited on WRs.

HOU WR Cecil Shorts - Week 14, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. New England
While three other Houston players registered the receiving TDs last Sunday in Buffalo, Cecil Shorts led the team with 91 yards on six grabs. He was targeted 10 times, the most he’s seen since Week 4. In the past three weeks, on 19 touches Cecil has totaled 207 yards and a TD. He is definitely getting his chances, but still makes for no more than a WR3 play against a New England defense yielding over 240 passing yards per game.

HOU WR Cecil Shorts - Week 13, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Buffalo
Has Cecil Shorts become the new Texans RB? It hasn’t come to that, but in the past two weeks he has seven rushes for 46 yards. In addition to his three carries for 20 yards against the Saints last Sunday, Cecil caught three passes for 18 yards and his second receiving TD of the season. He will continue to receive looks in the passing game and likely a few backfield touches, but DeAndre Hopkins is the top WR for Houston. Shorts is no more than a flex option at Buffalo this week.
