Perfect Fantasy Football Draft: 5th in a 12-Team Yahoo Half-PPR League

Getting the fifth pick in a 12-team Half-PPR league on Yahoo can be a little bit like finding yourself in the middle of a bunch of traffic zooming past you. Sometimes there are a quick eight picks in between where you select in a draft, and other times there are a full 14 picks. Tough choices between players at one spot likely mean the other player you are debating is gone by the time you draft again.

However, drafting fifth and roughly in the middle of each round thereafter is my favorite place to be in 2026. You will never miss out on a run. There are plenty of first-round potential options at pick five and pick 20, and the middle of the draft board allows you the flexibility that spots close to the turns don’t have.

Drafting fifth means you are boxed out of the top four or five players in any given draft. But if you give me the choice between the fifth and 20th pick or the first and 24th pick? I’ll take the former. There is a razor-thin margin in my mind between some of the top five picks, especially if you're looking at Christian McCaffrey or Jaxon Smith-Njigba. You likely miss out on Bijan Robinson, Jahmyr Gibbs, Ja'Marr Chase, and Puka Nacua. But the options at your pick in the second round are preferable.

My Plan of Attack When Drafting 5th in a 12-Team Half-PPR League

Roster Settings: 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 FLEX (WR/RB/TE), 1 Kicker, 1 DEF, seven bench spots

The way the draft and ADP seem to be shaking out in 2026, I am almost always going to be drafting one running back and one wide receiver in my first two picks when I draft fifth. Unless a player like Kenneth Walker III, Chase Brown, or Ashton Jeanty (if healthy) falls too far in the second round, I am looking to get a stud at each of those skill positions.

No matter what route is taken, there will be excellent players available at running back and wide receiver in the second, third, fourth, and fifth rounds.
