The Houston Texans are moving Brian Cushing back to strongside linebacker after playing him in the middle in the wake of DeMeco Ryan's season-ending injury.

“We did what we had to do two weeks ago with our situation,” Texans coach Gary Kubiak told reporters today. “Now, we’re starting to get a little bit healthy."

The Texans may use Cushing at middle linebacker going forward, but just in their nickel package.“I think what you could see is you could see him doing both, a little bit of both,” Kubiak said. "It’s just nice now that after what we’ve been through that Brian’s knowledge of doing it for a couple of weeks gives us some flexibility as a football team.”

Cushing only recorded 10 tackles in two starts at middle linebacker.

The former NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year has no sacks or interceptions after serving a four-game suspension for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy.

“When Cush plays the Sam, we’re more apt to get him involved in the pass rush,” Kubiak said. “It has been tricky how we’re trying to organize our defense with Cush moving around, so hopefully with some of this health we can get rid of some of those problems that we have.”
