The Browns just announced that Austin Davis will start for them Sunday at home against the Bengals, and that Manziel would be his backup.
“Austin took advantage of his opportunity on Monday night. He was prepared, played well and put us in position to win,” Pettine said in a statement released by the team. “He’s been great in the quarterback room all season and he has earned the right to start on Sunday. We expect him to play well.”
Davis came in with under nine minutes remaining and completed 7/10 passes for 77 yards and a touchdown. His targets included Brian Hartline (5), Travis Benjamin (3), Duke Johnson (1) and Gary Barnidge (1). The touchdown was a 42-yarder to Benjamin, who caught two-of-three targets for 58 yards and a score. Hartline caught three-of-five targets for 28 yards.
