When to Draft a Tight End in Your Fantasy Football League

Fantasy football is a game of relativity and, relatively speaking, the tight end position sucks. Last season, for example, by the time you got to the overall fantasy TE6 in Half-PPR scoring (Harold Fannin, 150.4 points), you already had the equivalent of the fantasy RB28 (Tyrone Tracy, 142.8 points) or the fantasy WR28 (Ladd McConkey, 147.9 points). However, now that we’re seeing such a league-wide increase in heavy personnel usage, we have seen the tight end position start to close its ranks versus the WR2/3 fringe, which gives the middle ground a little more validity.

We once had to aim only for the tight ends who had the upside of finishing the season as the highest-scoring player at the position, but now our streaming options can come closer to matching up with their wide receiver brethren.

As you can see by the chart above reflecting tight end average draft position versus tight end fantasy production over the last five years, the high-end of tight end production mostly resides in those first four rounds. The trend line would actually look much different if Brock Bowers hadn’t crushed the field as the TE10 in ‘24 or Tucker Kraft did much the same as the TE11 in ‘25, but that goes to show what can happen when you hit deep in the draft. Regardless, the tippy-top production typically resides in the first three rounds of your draft.

That said, we always seem to have some players on the cusp of breaking out, and the 2026 season is no different. Below, we will break down how to approach the tight end position in ‘26 according to draft position, assuming a 12-team snake draft with both positional and overall ADP courtesy of the 4for4 Multi-Site ADP tool.
