49ers Beat: Matt Breida, Alfred Morris to share RB duties

Veteran Alfred Morris earned a roster spot as insurance after second-year players Joe Williams and Jeremy McNichols failed to impress coach Kyle Shanahan and the organization. Morris will be paired with Matt Breida to share the duties in the backfield as McKinnon spends the season rehabbing to be at full strength for 2019.

Fantasy Impact:

As the story said, the two RBs are contrasts in styles and experience. It went on to say it could be a weekly adjustment, as Shanahan looks for the right matchups against a given opponent, beginning Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. Right now, neither Morris nor Breida knows exactly what to expect.

Fantasy Upside

According to NBCSports.com's Matt Maiocco, Williams still has a chance to live up to the promise the 49ers saw in him leading up to the 2017 draft. Maiocco explained, "On video, he showed HC Shanahan and running backs coach Bobby Turner everything they want out of a running back. He was chosen in the fourth round from Utah. He has good size and the ability to hit the hole quickly and tear off large chunks of yardage."

Fantasy Downside

Maiocco went on to point out that Williams lacked a sense of urgency as a rookie and did not hold onto the ball in training camp. He went on to spend his rookie season on injured reserve with a minor foot injury. Now he'll face serious competition from Raheem Mostert for the No. 3 RB spot behind Jerick McKinnon and Matt Breida.

2018 Bottom Line

The team's third running back does not figure to get many touches unless he is pressed into action due to an injury, and Mostert's special teams work could give him the edge over Williams. Either way, the winner of this competition is nothing more than waiver-wire watch list fodder.
