Scouting report

BAL RB Terrance West - Week 16, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Pittsburgh

Terrance West got 13 carries and caught four passes last week against the Eagles, totaling 122 yards on the day. It was good to see after he took a backseat to Kenneth Dixon the week before, and it seems like the Ravens will stick with a hot-hand approach when it comes to their backfield.

Dixon is still in the mix, and West faces a Steelers defense that ranks fifth in the league this year in rushing yards allowed per game, limiting his upside. However, if you’re in a bind at the RB position, West’s likely dozen-plus touches each week make him a reasonable low-end RB2/RB3 option in deeper leagues.

BAL RB Terrance West - Week 15, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Philadelphia

Terrance West only had two carries on Monday night against the Patriots, compared to 11 for rookie Kenneth Dixon. A diminished role that led to West only being on the field for 20% of the team’s snaps wasn’t a good sign for fantasy owners, but he may get more work in future matchups where the team can run more. The Patriots forced the Ravens to throw the ball 52 times and Dixon is more effective than West in the passing game.

This week, West faces a Philadelphia defense that is very average against the run, but more importantly, features an offense that should allow Baltimore to have a more balanced attack. While I expect more than two carries this week, he’s still very risky with Dixon stealing touches and being more productive with the opportunities. He’s a desperation play at best this week.

BAL RB Terrance West - Week 14, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. New England

Terrance West had two touchdowns last week against Miami on 13 touches, including three receptions, and finished with a total of 68 yards. West’s snap count went up to 51% last week, after being down under 40% the week before, which is a good sign for fantasy owners. However, the fact that it was a blowout may have been a factor.

This week, West will face a tough New England defense that has given up only six rushing touchdowns this season – tied for third least in football. Expect another time-share day for West as he gives up touches to rookie Kenneth Dixon, making it hard to trust him unless you’re in a large league and desperate for a guy who’ll likely get about a dozen touches.

BAL RB Terrance West - Week 13, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. Miami

Terrance West had 13 carries for 48 yards last week against the Bengals, and he added 16 more yards on three receptions. The bad thing for West is that he was off the field for 66% of Baltimore’s offensive snaps. He was outsnapped by rookie Kenneth Dixon for the first time this season, which isn’t a good sign for West owners.

This week, West faces a Dolphins defense that has only given up eight rushing touchdowns, but only Cleveland and San Francisco have allowed more rushing yards per game than Miami has this season. West’s value is limited because he only plays on first and second down and his workload is diminishing, but he has low-end RB3 potential, particularly in standard leagues, with what should be a grind-it-out matchup.

BAL RB Terrance West - Week 12, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. Cincinnati

Terrance West had only eight carries last week against Dallas, but he wound up with 42 yards and a touchdown. It’s concerning that his snap count was only a little higher than rookie Kenneth Dixon’s, but Dixon has yet to definitively proven he’s the better backfield option.

West is too risky to trust in most leagues, but he has some sleeper potential in large leagues as a low-end RB2. The Bengals have only given up eight rushing touchdowns this season, but they allow 123.4 yards per game to opposing runners – fifth most in the league.

BAL RB Terrance West - Week 11, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs. Dallas

Terrance West had 21 carries for 65 yards against the Browns last week, but lost some touches to rookie Kenneth Dixon (whose role continues to expand in the offense). West has three straight games now with underwhelming yards per carry, which isn’t a good sign for his long-term status as the starter. For now though, expect he’ll continue in a two-down capacity, giving him value.

This week, his value should be limited to low-end RB3 territory as he’ll face one of the top run defenses in the league. Dallas as allowed only four rushing touchdowns this season – tied for the best in the NFL – and they’re ranked third in rushing yards allowed per game. Expect another hefty workload for West that results in another 50-75 yards.

BAL RB Terrance West - Week 10, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 vs. Cleveland

Terrance West has had two straight dismal games now, including averaging only 1.4 yards per carry against the Steelers last week. He did get 16 touches (including a reception), but with only 27 yards on the day, rumblings about rookie Kenneth Dixon are starting again.

This week should be another opportunity for West to prove he can be a long-term answer for the Ravens. The Browns just gave up two touchdowns to Ezekiel Elliott last week, and only the 49ers have allowed more rushing yards per game to opposing teams this season. West is a risky option this week, but has a very high upside in this matchup if he can get another 16 touches. We’ve got him as a solid RB2.
