Browns announced they have waived RB Ben Tate.
The writing was on the wall following Week 11's game, as Tate was not happy with his limited role in the team's loss against Houston, Tate's former team. Still, it's a bit surprising this happened so quickly. Isaiah Crowell very well could benefit the most here, but we think both Crowell and Terrance West are playable backs going forward.
Outside of a matchup with the Bills in Week 13, the Browns have a very good slate of RB matchups the rest of the way (ATL, BUF, IND, CIN, CAR). The team stuck with Crowell even after fumbling early on, and he came into Week 11 with a much better yards per rush average (4.59) than either Tate (3.13) or West (3.64). The addition of Josh Gordon could very well open up the running game a little more too, which is obviously good news for owners of both.
Clearly, Crowell and West are worth a pickup if they are available in your league. Tate owners should hold tight and see where he lands. He has to clear waivers before becoming a free agent.

Browns running back Isaiah Crowell made his first NFL start Sunday in the Browns’ 23-7 loss to the Houston Texans, while Ben Tate was virtually invisible against his former team.
Browns coach Mike Pettine stuck with “Crow” following the fumble, only giving third-round pick Terrance West five carries for 12 yards. Former featured back Tate received even fewer chances, logging two rushing attempts for minus-9 yards.
Tate initially declined to speak with reporters, saying, “What do you want to talk to me for? I didn’t play a down.” But he returned to the locker room and talked with the media.
“This is definitely tough, especially losing,” said Tate, who signed a two-year, $6.2 million contract on March 16. “Losing is what’s tough. Losing the games, especially to my old team, that’s tough. I’m upset that we lost the game. Yeah, I’m upset that we lost the game.”
Tate now seemingly finds himself as the third RB on the Browns, behind Crowell and Terrance West. It was especially tough on him going against his old team and not seeing a lot of time, but that's how the Browns have handled their RB situation much of this season, but especially after Tate returned from injury. "Crow" now seems like the back to own in terms of fantasy, but don't be surprised if it changes again this season. The presence of WR Josh Gordon returning this week should help the running game as defenses have to shift their attention, so Crowell owners may be in a good situation as long as he can continue to hold the job. It may also be key that the team stuck with Crowell even after he fumbled.

Browns coach Mike Pettine understands why Ben Tate is displeased. But rookie Terrance West has earned the extra carries, Pettine said, and the first-year coach is more concerned about weekly victories than pleasing everyone on his team at the same time.
“Ben’s a competitor,” Pettine said Wednesday at the team’s practice facility. “And while I don’t think it’s good practice to kind of air how you feel publicly … it’s understandable. I think if you sat with every player and said, ‘What’s your agenda? What’s your goal? How do you think your playing time should be handled? What do you see your role as?,’ we’re not going to bat 1.000. There are going to be times where we have to choose as a staff what we feel is best for the team over what the individual feels is best for him. I just think this is an example of that. Ben’s a guy that wants the ball, wants to be out there, wants to be the guy. And so it’s understandable when we started Terrance over him and had the results that we had.”
West is on somewhat shaky ground given the talent in the Browns' RB corps, but Pettine gave him another vote of confidence, so it appears he will continue to serve as the team's lead back.

Ben Tate, happy the Browns are in first place, would be a lot happier if he had more to do with the team’s success.
Tate in March signed a two-year contract with the Browns in free agency to be the featured running back and then beat out rookies Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell to win the starting job. He has since lost it to West, the third-round pick from Towson.
A knee injury in the opener sidelined Tate for the next two games, but he was back as the starter against the Titans on Oct. 5 and rushed for 124 yards on 22 carries. He got 25 carries for 78 yards the following week in the 31-10 demolition of the Steelers.
Tate led the team in rushing against Jacksonville and Oakland, such as it was, but in those games gained 36 yards on 16 carries and 26 yards on 15 carries as the Browns learned to play without Pro Bowl center Alex Mack. Tate started against Tampa Bay but his numbers were abysmal — 3 yards on 10 carries.
West started against Cincinnati and carried 26 times for 94 yards. Tate wasn’t even second; Crowell rushed for 41 yards on 12 tries. Tate gained 34 yards in 10 carries. Each player scored a rushing touchdown.
“I’d be lying if I said (it’s satisfying),” Tate said after practice on Nov. 11. “It’s not, but whatever the organization thinks is best for the team, then that’s what we’re going to do.
“I’m just a player, Man. I’m just a number to them. I couldn’t really tell you why things are happening or what’s going on. The only thing I can do is when it’s time to go to work, go to work.”
