After Texan QB Ryan Mallett's first NFL start, which ended in a double-digit Texans victory at Cleveland, it was tough to temper enthusiasm and optimism. O'Brien said Mallett's ability to move the offense quickly and decisively down the field was the brightest of bright spots in the 23-7 victory.

"That's one thing that I'd seen in practice: that he understood the rhythm that we wanted to play," O'Brien said. "He had performed that well in practice. So when we continually saw that week-to-week, we knew he was a guy that when he got into the game, he would know how we wanted to play."

Fantasy Impact: 

It was a tough matchup against the Browns who were fifth in allowing fantasy points to QBs coming into Week 11. Things actually get fairly favorable for Mallett the rest of the season. He should at least be able to provide some QB2 production especially if the schedule remains in his advantage.

Texans name Ryan Mallett starting quarterback

Ryan Mallett is the Texans’ starting quarterback.

Coach Bill O’Brien named Mallett the starter Wednesday, after debating during recent days whether to make a change.

“This might be the thing that helps our team,” O’Brien said at NRG Stadium. “I might be wrong.”

O’Brien said Mallett will be given a full shot to hold the starting role.

Fantasy Impact: 

From a receiving standpoint, the Texans were generating 1.00 fantasy points per pass attempt (1 point per 10 receiving yards plus six points per touchdown divided by the total number of pass attempts). The league average is 0.98, so Ryan Fitzpatrick was decidedly average in helping his receivers to produce receiving yardage and touchdowns. Mallett will have to play pretty well in order to maintain the fantasy value of DeAndre Hopkins and Andre Johnson. Mallett has the Week 10 bye to prepare, and then faces a couple of difficult matchups (CLE & CIN) before the schedule gets easier.
