Scouting report

CLE RB Nick Chubb - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs. Los Angeles Chargers
Nick Chubb found the end zone in Week 7, but he also gained only 32 total yards on 14 opportunities, following that up with 52 yards on 18 opportunities in Week 8. The workload is clearly a step in the right direction, but how sure can we be that this is the same Chubb of old? The Chargers run defense ranks 8th in RB aFPA and with a Bye Week on the horizon, we could see the team ease off the veteran back in Week 9. Consider him an RB3 with a good shot of finding the end zone.

CLE RB Nick Chubb - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs. Baltimore Ravens
Nick Chubb found the end zone in Week 7, but he also gained only 32 total yards on 14 opportunities. This is a decent matchup against the Ravens, but he will likely continue to get eased into his typical workload, which makes him something closer to an RB3 than an option we should be leaning on right now. The team's bye comes in Week 10 and he should be more valuable during our playoff runs.

CLE RB Nick Chubb - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. Cincinnati Bengals
The most likely scenario feels like Nick Chubb returning in Week 7, making all of his backfield mates marginal or useless fantasy pieces, while he finds himself in a full-fledged committee in which we'll need to bet on which weeks he can pop up for high-end RB2 numbers. It is very doubtful that his first game back will fall into those guidelines. Around 10 carries seems like the correct outcome, which doesn't move the needle enough to get him into your lineup.

CLE RB Nick Chubb - 2024 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
When healthy, Nick Chubb absolutely terrorizes defenses with the ball in his hands. Over 1,269 career rushes, he holds a 5.2 YPC and 3.93 yards created after contact mark, regularly finishing at or near the top of the position annually. His role in the receiving game is decent, if not quite spectacular, but it has historically offered us a nice floor, ala Derrick Henry. Offseason fluff pieces have shown Chubb lifting enormous amounts of weight, which should be a good sign that his knee injury is progressing in the right direction. The best case scenario sees the veteran back easing into the offense in the beginning of the season before returning to form in the pivotal second half of the year.

Fantasy Downside
There's absolutely nothing guaranteeing that Chubb completely recovers from his second devastating knee injury. Hints from the team place him on the sidelines for at least the first month of the season, which means an IR trip would be quite likely, and heading into his Age 29 campaign, the running back may have been slowing down simply due to his hefty career workload. There's a chance that Chubb returns by the end of the year and is firmly planted into a committee approach with Jerome Ford, D'Onta Foreman, and others.

2024 Bottom Line
Unlike teammate Jerome Ford, there is a decent chance that Nick Chubb will return fully healthy in 2024 and put up consistent RB1 numbers by the end of the year, but that might come too late in the calendar for comfort. The most likely scenario feels like Chubb returning around mid-season, making all of his backfield mates marginal or useless fantasy pieces, while he finds himself in a full-fledged committee in which we'll need to bet on which weeks he can pop up for high-end RB2 numbers. It's a gamble, but if his ADP is low enough, it's not a bad gamble to make.

CLE RB Nick Chubb - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Pittsburgh Steelers

A new season but the same old Nick Chubb. He starts the season with a 100-yard game. Big surprise there. And he very well could do it again. San Francisco ran for 188 yards against Pittsburgh in Week 1, including 152 for Christian McCaffrey. Yeah, we like Nick Chubb, can you believe it?

CLE RB Nick Chubb - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Cincinnati Bengals

What is there to say about Nick Chubb that hasn't been said before? Chubb is arguably the best downhill running back in the NFL, he had seven 100-yard games last season and this backfield is basically his now with Kareem Hunt gone. Jerome Ford will see some work, but Chubb is as safe as they come. Expect Cleveland to ride their hot hand in Chubb in a huge divisional showdown in Week 1 as they take on Joe Burrow and the Bengals.

CLE RB Nick Chubb - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
What else is there to say about Nick Chubb that hasn't been said already? He's one of, if not the, best pure running backs in the NFL. He finished third in the NFL with 1,525 rushing yards and had 13 total touchdowns (12 rushing). He is the center point of the Browns offense.

Fantasy Downside
There's almost no downside to Nick Chubb in fantasy. Sure, he'll have some weeks where the numbers aren't there, but they are few and far between.

2023 Bottom Line
Chubb is one of the safest fantasy picks this year. He'll get what feels like a billion touches each week and Kareem Hunt is no longer in Cleveland, though the Browns do also like Jerome Ford. Regardless, Chubb is matchup-proof and has still been lasting to the second round in drafts. Go grab him.
