Scouting report

IND WR Marcus Johnson - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 at Detroit Lions

Marcus Johnson caught a 55-yarder against the Bengals before the bye last week, and was targeted a team-high eight times. He finished with 108 yards after catching three balls for 53 yards the previous week. T.Y. Hilton has struggled, rookie Michael Pittman is hurt, and we don’t fully know who Philip Rivers is going to favor in this offense, so it wouldn’t hurt to grab Johnson in his fourth season out of Texas as a speculative add.

This week, the Colts face a Lions’ defense that ranks 19th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers, so there’s some upside if Johnson can hit eight targets again. It’s risky to trust any Colts receiver, as five of Rivers’ seven touchdown passes this year have gone to running backs and tight ends, but if you’re desperate for a bye week or injury replacement, Johnson has some boom-bust potential.

IND WR Marcus Johnson - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Jacksonville Jaguars

Marcus Johnson had just one catch for two yards last week against the Panthers. With Zach Pascal and T.Y. Hilton both healthy and starting, there’s very little hope for Johnson to get consistent snaps and targets, making it hard to trust him. He should remain on waivers for the final week of the season.

IND WR Marcus Johnson - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Carolina Panthers

Marcus Johnson followed up a big day against the Buccaneers in Week 14 with only 37 yards on two receptions against the Saints last week. The Colts struggled to move the ball and got destroyed by New Orleans in a lopsided loss. Johnson has some upside, particularly long-term as a dynasty stash, but the Colts’ offense hasn’t been able to sustain more than one receiver all season and with T.Y. Hilton back in the lineup, he’s to risky and unpredictable to bank on in the vast majority of fantasy leagues.

IND WR Marcus Johnson - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at New Orleans Saints

Marcus Johnson has been an active part of the offense for two consecutive games now and should continue to benefit from the depleted group of Colts wide receivers. He had three catches for 105 yards and a touchdown last week against the Buccaneers and has some upside for the rest of the season. He’s risky because of his inexperience and lack of proven production, but he’ll face a Saints defense that just gave up numbers to three 49ers WR’s last week and ranks 16th in aFPA to the position this year. He’s a longshot, but if you’re desperate, there’s some low-end WR3 upside there.

IND WR Marcus Johnson - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Marcus Johnson had a nice enough game against the Titans last week, catching four of the six balls thrown his way for 55 yards. Johnson hasn’t been particularly productive, but he’s seeing high snap counts – 93% of the team’s offensive snaps last week – and that gives him at least some upside in a great matchup like this week. The Buccaneers rank dead last in aFPA to opposing wide receivers this season. If you’re desperate, you could take a gamble, but he’s unlikely to see more looks than Zach Pascal, and the Colts haven’t shown the ability to sustain more than one fantasy receivers at a time. He should probably be left on waivers in most leagues.

IND WR Marcus Johnson - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at Houston Texans

Marcus Johnson stepped up last week and scored a touchdown while also playing on 93% of the team’s offensive snaps. He wound up with four catches and 38 yards in a lopsided Colts victory over the Jaguars, and he showed more talent than the rest of the Colts’ trio of backup receivers trying to fill in for the injury T.Y. Hilton, Devin Funchess and Parris Campbell. Johnson has upside in a nice matchup this week if he’s once again second on the depth chart, but he’s too risky to trust. Hilton may be back, and even if he isn’t, the Colts haven’t been able to sustain multiple fantasy receivers at all this year and Zach Pascal is still leading the team in targets. Sit him and leave him on waivers in most leagues but keep an eye on him.

IND WR Marcus Johnson - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Marcus Johnson saw his first action of the season against the Dolphins last week in a depleted Colts receiving corps and caught one of the three balls thrown his way for nine yards. While the release of Deon Cain and the injuries to the Colts’ top three receivers might spell opportunity for the third-year player out of Texas, it’s hard to trust him in this offense when he’s likely to still be third on the depth chart behind Zach Pascal and Chester Rogers. Keep him on waivers.
