McCoy fans had a scare in the fourth quarter when he left the field and doubled over on the sideline. There were also a few incidents last season that put scares into owners. But McCoy insists his shifty running style will keep him healthy.
Though it's possible for David Johnson to increase his average from 23.3 touches per game to 30, it could come at a price.
Three running backs who averaged more than 28 touches per game were injured the following season. Four were injured in the year after that -- including Larry Johnson and Edgerrin James.
Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer believes in trying to get Johnson 30 touches a game, but he's also a realist.
"I think getting him 30 touches is the plan until he's sore or he loses a little bit of flexibility or whatever it may be as things pop up during the season," Palmer said. "Ideally that's great. I think that's the plan. If something changes, like it can in this game, and you have a hamstring or shoulder or the thing that comes up, the plan changes, but it's a great plan to start with."
James Wilder was the last RB to average over 30 touches per game with 30.8, the story said. Cards HC Bruce Arians said there is a difference between Johnson accomplishing the feat vs. Wilder from back in 1984 - Johnson won't run the ball 30 times. Arians was quoted as saying there's a big difference between "catching 10 passes than running the ball 30 times." Arians added that getting the ball in Johnson's hands and creating space makes a big difference, too, when it comes to wear and tear on the body.
Philly.com's Zach Berman on the Eagles' new running backs:
Last season was the first time DeMarco Murray played 16 games, and he had 392 carries. That was the most by any running back since Larry Johnson in 2006. Johnson never had another 1,000-yard season.
Don’t expect Murray to near that carry total this season. He will no doubt be the featured running back, but coach Chip Kelly wants carries to be shared. That’s where Ryan Mathews comes in.
Mathews appeared at first to be the consolation prize to missing out on Gore, but the Eagles still signed him. The former first-round pick is a talented rusher who has twice topped 1,000 yards, but injuries have also been an ongoing issue. He had a career-low 330 yards last season while playing on six games. I wouldn't count on him carrying the ball more than 220 times like he did in his 1,000-yard season (unless Murray gets injured), but he can find a sweet spot in the mid-100s.
We currently project Mathews for 132 carries for 561 yards, which jibes with the numbers that Berman had in mind. We project Murray for 285 carries (for 1,279 yards), which is a far cry from the 392 totes he saw last season. Berman went on to say that the team "needs to get" Darren Sproles more involved, but that may be tough since the team replaced LeSean McCoy with two new running backs.
Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray is on pace to tie Larry Johnson's single-season NFL record for carries in a season with 416, and coach Jason Garrett hopes Murray does not come near it.
Garrett said he would like to lessen the load on the NFL's leading rusher going forward after handing it to Murray 130 times for 670 yards in the Cowboys' first five games. Murray carried a career-high 31 times for 136 yards in the Cowboys' 20-17 overtime win against the Houston Texans on Sunday, three weeks after posting a career-high 29 carries against the Tennessee Titans.
Murray has had at least 22 carries in the first five games, which is the most he has had in any five-game span of his career. He had four straight games with 20 carries as a rookie in 2011.
"DeMarco was out there and we think that's probably too many carries in the game, week in and week out," Garrett said. "He ended up with 31 so we'd like to get that number lower. We'd really just like to get the other guys an opportunity. I don't see any wear and tear in DeMarco but having said that, we want to make sure we create a rotation and we'll focus on doing that in the next few weeks."
There's been some talk of this the last few weeks, but it's apparently easier said than done when you're off to a 4-1 start. But Murray has not had more than 217 carries in a season with ankle, foot and knee injuries knocking him out of 11 games in his first three seasons, the story pointed out. Up to this point, backup running backs Joseph Randle and Lance Dunbar have combined for 22 carries for 88 yards in the first four games.
