Cowboys Beat: DeMarco Murray 'too good' to take off the field

Cowboys beat writer Todd Archer on DeMarco Murray's heavy workload: There’s some concern about it, and they have rested him at different times for a series or a few plays in the first half of the past three games, but he is their bell cow. He is their guy. They will be mindful of how much work he gets, but he’s too good to take off the field for extended spells. They like backup running backs Joseph Randle and Lance Dunbar, but those guys can’t do what Murray does in the run and pass game. He doesn’t look like he’s wearing down. He had 19 carries for 141 yards against the Redskins, so his carries were down from what they had been. But I’d maintain he took more of a beating in that game than he did when he had 29 carries in Week 2 against the Tennessee Titans. Jason Garrett was around Emmitt Smith for the bulk of his career, so I think he has a watchful eye to this sort of thing, as does Scott Linehan, who was around Steven Jackson in St. Louis. They will be smart with Murray, but not to the point that it costs them games.

Fantasy Impact: 

Murray is averaging 29.0 touches per game, which is a big increase from the 19.3 touches he averaged in 2013. So far, he hasn't shown any signs of wearing down, but Murray owners should try to secure Joseph Randle just in case. Those owners who don't own Murray would be wise to stash Randle (or hold him ransom) in case Murray breaks down.

Cowboys want to lighten DeMarco Murray's workload

Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray is on pace to tie Larry Johnson's single-season NFL record for carries in a season with 416, and coach Jason Garrett hopes Murray does not come near it.

Garrett said he would like to lessen the load on the NFL's leading rusher going forward after handing it to Murray 130 times for 670 yards in the Cowboys' first five games. Murray carried a career-high 31 times for 136 yards in the Cowboys' 20-17 overtime win against the Houston Texans on Sunday, three weeks after posting a career-high 29 carries against the Tennessee Titans.

Murray has had at least 22 carries in the first five games, which is the most he has had in any five-game span of his career. He had four straight games with 20 carries as a rookie in 2011.

"DeMarco was out there and we think that's probably too many carries in the game, week in and week out," Garrett said. "He ended up with 31 so we'd like to get that number lower. We'd really just like to get the other guys an opportunity. I don't see any wear and tear in DeMarco but having said that, we want to make sure we create a rotation and we'll focus on doing that in the next few weeks."

Fantasy Impact: 

There's been some talk of this the last few weeks, but it's apparently easier said than done when you're off to a 4-1 start. But Murray has not had more than 217 carries in a season with ankle, foot and knee injuries knocking him out of 11 games in his first three seasons, the story pointed out. Up to this point, backup running backs Joseph Randle and Lance Dunbar have combined for 22 carries for 88 yards in the first four games.

Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray, who played 61 of 69 plays Week 1, was the only running back in the league whose backup didn’t get a carry in Week 1. Receiver Dwayne Harris had the Cowboys’ only other rushing attempt, gaining 9 yards on an end-around.

Backup running back Lance Dunbar caught three passes for 21 yards, but he played only four plays. The team’s other running back, Joseph Randle, played no offensive snaps.

“The league has gone toward teams using two backs, three backs, and trying to get their running back production from a lot of different guys doing a lot of different things,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. “There are very few teams who have that one guy who carries the load.

“We don’t view it like that. We feel like Lance Dunbar and Joseph Randle can be contributors for us, but there’s no doubt in our mind that DeMarco can be a feature back."

Fantasy Impact: 

Murray was drafted as a complimentary back, the story said. But the change to a zone running scheme has allowed Murray to emerge. The story points out that in his past six games, dating to Thanksgiving Day, Murray has averaged 22.7 touches for an average of 125.2 total yards.

Murray: Lance Dunbar and Joseph Randle will have an 'important role' in offense

What he’s seen throughout the offseason and training camp from backs like Lance Dunbar and Joseph Randle has Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray feeling more comfortable about taking a breather in 2014.

“[Dunbar] and Randle are going to have an important role this year and those are guys that not only do I trust, but the coaches trust,” Murray said Wednesday. “Me not wanting to come out last year was because I wasn’t sure if things would go right, but these guys playing the way they play and practice the way they practice, I’m very confident that if I come out they can continue to carry the load and do some great things for us.”

Fantasy Impact: 

This is not earth-shattering news but it speaks to the workload that Murray is expecting heading into the season. He may not be quite the bellcow he has been in recent years. He saw nearly 65% of the carries in 2013, but only played 14 games.
