Packers WR Jarrett Boykin practiced well this week, further strengthening his grip on the No. 4 berth. As a rookie, Boykin played 92 snaps and caught five passes. One of his most obvious shortcomings was a glaring lack of aggressiveness after the catch. On Saturday night, Boykin started and played 28 snaps. On his first targeted attempt, he beat cornerback Janoris Jenkins on a slant for 7 yards. On his second, he ran a stop-start sideline comeback route against the press coverage of nickel back Trumaine Johnson, putting the defender on his heels and making the catch 9 yards downfield. Johnson (6-2, 204) came up for the tackle but Boykin made him miss.

Fantasy Impact:

Boykin will be fantasy relevant if any of the other Packer receivers miss time due to injury. Keep him in mind as a late-round flier if you have Randall Cobb, Jordy Nelson or James Jones on the roster.

Packers "hope" Jordy Nelson will be ready for Week 1

Jordy Nelson's surgery was to clear up a lingering problem and done with the intention of having the receiver ready for the start of the regular season. He probably could not have waited any longer for the fix without having to sacrifice at least the season opener.

"Fortunately with Jordy, his particular thing that we had to go and fix is something that we have some experience with with some other guys here," Packers general manager Ted Thompson said. "So we think we can predict about the way it'll go, but you never know."

Neither Thompson nor coach Mike McCarthy was specific on what was ailing Nelson. His agent, Vann McElroy, did not return a phone message seeking comment. NFL.com reported it was a minor issue Nelson has been dealing with since his days at Kansas State.

Nelson ruptured a bursa sac in a knee in Super Bowl XLV and missed all but a handful of plays against Minnesota on Dec. 2 because of a knee injury, but has not suffered anything that kept him out for an extended period of time. The Packers are hoping this surgery ends any trouble he has been having with it.

"Our hope is for Jordy to be ready for the season opener at San Francisco," McCarthy said.

Fantasy Impact:

Fantasy owners shouldn't move Nelson down too far in their rankings, but he's certainly a less attractive pick in the 4th round of 12-team leagues. If he can play in Week 1, he will represent nice value in the 5th round, assuming he plays a full 16 games. Possible beneficiaries are Randall Cobb, James Jones and Jermichael Finley, but if Nelson misses any games, Jarrett Boykin is going to see the biggest spike in snaps and targets. He will be fantasy-relevant if any of the Packer receivers miss time.

Schefter: Packers WR Jordy Nelson underwent knee surgery Monday. Expected to be sidelined 4-to-6 weeks but doctors expect him to be ready for opener.

Ian Rapoport had this to say on Twitter: "It's to fix old, nerve issue he's dealt with off-and-on since K-State. Procedure to minimize impact of nerve. The belief on Jordy Nelson is he'll be back by the opener. Took a window now to deal with knee, rather than fight it all season. After dealing with pain from the nerve, Nelson hopes to finally end issue for good and be back 100%. James Jones had similar issue & is fine."

Fantasy Impact:

The hits keep on coming for the Packers, who have recently lost tackle Bryan Bulaga with a torn ACL (though it looks like he may try to play through it). As for Nelson, we're not sure why he didn't address the nerve issue in the spring, but it sounds as if the team is expecting him back for Week 1. “I still like the guys we've got,” Rodgers said after practice. “We have a lot of talent at that position. I think Randall Cobb is a guy who could be a 100-plus catch guy every year. James Jones led the league in touchdown receptions last year. [Jordy Nelson] has had some real big years for us.”

After the big three, the Packers have Jarrett Boykin, who came to the rookie orientation camp a year ago as a tryout player after being cut by Jacksonville and earned a spot on the 53-man roster coming out of training camp as the sixth receiver. The rookie caught only five passes for 27 yards in regular-season play, but his final catch was a big one: A critical 7-yard grab on fourth down against Minnesota in the regular-season finale that kept a late scoring drive alive. The coaches like his size (6-foot-2, 218 pounds) and detailed approach to the game.

“I like what Jarrett Boykin brings. He's a big, physical receiver who's going to get some opportunities this year,” Rodgers said. “And I think he really has a great approach to the game, as does Jeremy Ross. Both those guys last year really stepped up and cared about it enough to put in a lot of extra time.”

Fantasy Impact:

Owners shouldn't sleep on Boykin who is an injury away from being fantasy relevant in 2013.
