WAS WR Jahan Dotson - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Jahan Dotson had a solid rookie season with the Commanders as he ended up leading the team in receiving touchdowns (7) despite playing just 12 games. He especially shined down the stretch, averaging 4.2 receptions for 68.8 yards and 0.6 touchdowns in the final five games of the season. When Dotson returned from injury, he was limited in the three games back, but in the games he actually played and was involved, he was very productive. Heading into 2023, Dotson should maintain his role as the No. 2 WR in this offense.

Fantasy Downside
Dotson had a promising rookie season, but there are few notable changes heading into 2023. For starters, a new quarterback in either Sam Howell or Jacoby Brissett. Secondly, the Commanders brought in a new offensive coordinator in Eric Bieniemy. Both of these could end up being good things, but the uncertainty carries some risk. What we do know is Washington’s offense hasn’t finished in the top 10 in points or yards since 2016. We also know the Commanders were run-heavy last season, having the fourth-most rush attempts in the league. Dotston will also be playing second fiddle to Terry McLaurin, so it’s yet to be seen if this offense can sustain two top-level wide receivers.

2023 Bottom Line
Dotson is a bit of a sleeper option heading into 2023 because some may look at his overall numbers from his rookie season and miss the bigger picture. He missed five games and had three games where he played less snaps and was targeted just four times. Dotson also had to play with three different starting quarterbacks, which always adds in a bit of a learning curve. But Washington’s QB situation should be more stable this season, and adding Bieniemy could lead to an uptick in their production in the passing game. Dotson’s current ADP makes him a player worth targeting in redraft leagues.

WAS WR Jahan Dotson - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Cleveland Browns

Jahan Dotson had another great game last week, finishing 6-76-1 on nine targets. When healthy, Dotson has been a touchdown machine for Washington. In the six games he's played at least 70% of the offensive snaps, Dotson has scored in five of them with six total touchdowns. He even scored a touchdown in Week 4 when he eventually left to an injury after playing 59% of the snaps. Dotson will play with Carson Wentz this week, but the rookie had success with Wentz earlier in the season. The bigger concern will be a tough matchup against the Browns (4th aFPA) this week. Dotson carries some risk because he's been a little volatile this season, but his hot streak should inspire some confidence. He should be viewed as a strong WR3 option for Week 17.

WAS WR Jahan Dotson - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at San Francisco 49ers

Jahan Dotson had a huge game last week, finishing 4-105-1 on six targets. It was Dotson's first 100-yard game of his career, and his second game in a row with a touchdown. Dotson has now put together back-to-back good games after struggling to produce in his immediate return from injury. Dotson is still sketchy given up his inconsistent nature. He's also fighting for targets with two other talented receivers in Terry McLaurin and Curtis Samuel. Dotson should be viewed as a WR4 option in an OK matchup vs. the 49ers (19th aFPA) this week.

WAS WR Jahan Dotson - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. New York Giants

After essentially doing nothing since returning from injury, Jahan Dotson finally stepped up in Week 13 with a solid 5-54-1 performance on nine targets. Dotson got off to a hot start this season, catching four touchdowns in his first four games. Then he was sidelined due to injury and was barely utilized when he returned. We'll see if Dotson can keep the momentum going in Week 15 against the Giants (21st aFPA). Although given his lack of production in the games prior, Dotson should be viewed as a risky option. He's not much more than a desperation WR5 this week.

WAS WR Jahan Dotson - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at New York Giants

Jahan Dotson saw just one target last week, finishing with no catches. Dotson hasn't been very involved since returning from injury, seeing four targets in three games with two total catches. Until he starts producing, we'd avoid him in fantasy.

WAS WR Jahan Dotson - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. Atlanta Falcons

Jahan Dotson got off to a strong start in his rookie season, but hasn't done a whole lot since returning from injury. His in his two games back, he's caught one pass in each contest for a total of 27 yards. Although part of that could be due to Washington playing two tough pass defenses. Things get easier this week against the Falcons. Still, Dotson is a hard player to trust given his lack of production lately. He should be viewed as a mid-tier WR5 in Week 12.

WAS WR Jahan Dotson - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 at Houston Texans

Jahan Dotson returned to action last week, his first game appearance since Week 4. He didn't do a whole lot, though, finishing with one catch for 14 yards on one target. Dotson appears not to be up to full speed yet as he recovers from his hamstring injury. He only played on 41% of the offensive snaps. When he was healthy through the first three weeks he was seeing around 90% of the snaps. We'll see if Dotson is any better this week in a tough matchup vs. the Texans (10th aFPA). Given his production last week, and the tough matchup, Dotson would be a risky play in Week 11. He should be viewed as a WR4.
