Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray, who played 61 of 69 plays Week 1, was the only running back in the league whose backup didn’t get a carry in Week 1. Receiver Dwayne Harris had the Cowboys’ only other rushing attempt, gaining 9 yards on an end-around.

Backup running back Lance Dunbar caught three passes for 21 yards, but he played only four plays. The team’s other running back, Joseph Randle, played no offensive snaps.

“The league has gone toward teams using two backs, three backs, and trying to get their running back production from a lot of different guys doing a lot of different things,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. “There are very few teams who have that one guy who carries the load.

“We don’t view it like that. We feel like Lance Dunbar and Joseph Randle can be contributors for us, but there’s no doubt in our mind that DeMarco can be a feature back."

Murray was drafted as a complimentary back, the story said. But the change to a zone running scheme has allowed Murray to emerge. The story points out that in his past six games, dating to Thanksgiving Day, Murray has averaged 22.7 touches for an average of 125.2 total yards.
