It appeared that Jaguars running back Bernard Pierce had simply done something bone-headed. But there may have been extenuating circumstances, namely a head injury.

During a Buccaneers punt return last week, Pierce got turned around and, instead of trying to tackle the returner, ended up blocking a Bucs player instead. It made the rounds of the Internet, and everyone pointed and laughed at those silly Jaguars, caught in another zany mishap.

Except, it stopped being funny when Pierce was diagnosed with a concussion after the game.

T.J. Yeldon on top of Jags RB depth chart

T.J. Yeldon is the Jaguars’ starting running back.

That doesn’t qualify as a huge surprise, but it was perhaps the most notable “news” when the team released its Week 1 unofficial depth chart on Tuesday.

Yeldon, a rookie second-round selection from the University of Alabama, is listed as the starter ahead of veteran Denard Robinson, veteran Toby Gerhart, veteran Bernard Pierce and rookie Corey Grant.

Fantasy Impact: 

Yeldon, Robinson and Gerhart are all expected to play on offense in a heavy rotation, with Gerhart the short-yardage back, the story said. Yeldon and Robinson had been listed as co-starters throughout the preseason. We think Yeldon has some potential, but he may not see a lot of scoring chances if the Jags fall out of games. His success could also be tied to QB Blake Bortles improving over last year. If all goes right, we think he has top-20 potential this year.

T.J. Yeldon, Denard Robinson and Toby Gerhart are the top three backs, but Bernard Pierce is making a pretty strong push to not only earn playing time but be a main piece of the running back rotation.

"His toughness and his work ethic and mentality I think has been great," HC Gus Bradley said. "It's been great for that running back room. He's been a great teammate on offense and in that room, and his leadership [has been good].

"I didn't know much about him [when the Jaguars claimed him in March]. I heard good things but it's been even better."

Fantasy Impact: 

Pierce has had a good camp and then followed it with a strong performance in the Jaguars' 23-21 victory over Pittsburgh last Friday. He ran five times for 15 yards and caught three passes for 22 yards. He had one drop but he also had one of the highlights of the night when he hurdled potential tackler B.W. Webb. The story added Pierce can be used as an every down back or a third down back, giving the Jags some flexibility. Yeldon is expected to be a big piece to the running game.
