There was little question this weekend the Chargers would promote tight end Asante Cleveland from their practice squad, needing help at the position with Antonio Gates expected to be sidelined Sunday against the Colts.

Fantasy Impact: 

Gates is listed as doubtful for Sunday against the Colts and this move would certainly indicate his hamstring will keep him from playing. Hunter Henry is poised for a large workload without Gates in the lineup.

There was little question this weekend the Chargers would promote tight end Asante Cleveland from their practice squad, needing help at the position with Antonio Gates expected to be sidelined Sunday against the Colts.

It was a matter of how they’d create the roster room.

On Saturday, Andre Williams was notified. It’s him.

San Diego waived the former Giants running back to sign Cleveland to its 53-man roster. Williams theoretically could return next week, but he first must clear waivers Monday afternoon. Gates officially is listed as doubtful to play Sunday with a hamstring injury.

Fantasy Impact: 

Kenneth Farrow gained some positive press this summer and is shaping up to be the team's RB2 behind Melvin Gordon. The Bolts also signed Dexter McCluster this week.

The 49ers’ super-sized collection of tight ends shrunk by one Monday morning when Asante Cleveland got traded to the New England Patriots, a league source confirmed.

In return, the 49ers acquired offensive lineman Jordan Devy, according to ESPN. The trade was first reported by Comcast SportsNet Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco.

Devy (6-foot-6, 320 pounds) played both left guard and right guard last season for the New England Patriots, who employed the Memphis product on their 2013 practice squad after he was cut out of training camp by the Baltimore Ravens. He also has experience playing tackle, and that versatility is what the 49ers’ makeshift line covets.

Cleveland, a Sacramento native, led all 49ers receivers in Saturday night’s exhibition-opening loss at Houston, totaling three receptions for 10 yards. Two of those catches came on third down, and each was a yard short of the first-down marker.
