An MRI on linebacker Scott McKillop's left knee showed a torn ACL and torn patellar tendon, according to a source with knowledge of the results. McKillop suffered the injury yesterday afternoon when he leaped to deflect a pass and came down awkwardly on his left leg. McKillop punched his fists against the ground as trainers tended to him and he was carted off the field. A torn ACL means that McKillop likely will miss the season, although that hasn't been determined yet.

McKillop is in his second year. He led the 49ers in special teams tackles last season and he had been practicing as the No. 2 "ted" linebacker behind Takeo Spikes this summer. Whoever is Spikes' back-up this year has the inside edge on replacing him if Spikes, who is in the final year of his contract, doesn't return next season. McKillop's injury seemingly opens the door for third-round draft pick NaVorro Bowman and for veteran Matt Wilhelm.
