Vikings RB Jerick McKinnon (foot) missed practice Thursday after taking limited reps Wednesday. The midweek downgrade is typically a bad sign. If McKinnon is out, Adrian Peterson would likely see a few extra snaps on third team unless the team decides to insert Matt Asiata into that role.

Lions plan to get Ameer Abdullah the ball 'a number of different ways'

While Ameer Abdullah is clearly Detroit’s best option at running back, don’t expect him to carry the ball like Adrian Peterson or Doug Martin. The Lions aren’t planning on anything like that for him. Not even close.

He’ll get his touches. Just not like a traditional lead back might.

“I don’t envision him carrying the ball 30 times in a ballgame,” Lions coach Jim Caldwell said. “I think he’s capable, certainly, but that’s not his strength. I think he’s one of those guys that you have to get it to him a number of different ways.

“Do I think he’s durable enough to do it? Absolutely. Do I think he’s strong enough to do it? Absolutely. But I just don’t think that’s his cup of tea.”

Fantasy Impact:

It sounds as if Abdullah will have a larger role in the passing game after averaging just 1.6 catches per game as a rookie. Zach Zenner will be used in relief and we know Theo Riddick will be used frequently as a receiver.

Vikings RB Jerick McKinnon (foot) took limited practice reps Wednesday. McKinnon figures to suit up in Week 1, though he’s unlikely to see enough touches to be fantasy relevant behind Adrian Peterson. He could be a factor in PPR formats if he can lock down the third down role.

Vikes RB Adrian Peterson to decide if he sees preseason action

The Minnesota Vikings have not come to a decision yet about whether Adrian Peterson will play in the preseason, coach Mike Zimmer said Monday. If the league's leading rusher does see the field before the start of the regular season, it will be in large part because he wants to get in an exhibition game.

"I'm going to sit down and talk to him about it and if he wants to play then we'll discuss what we think," Zimmer said. "If he goes in there, he's probably not going to get one pass and out. So he's going to play (for a longer period of time if he does play)."

Fantasy Impact:

Peterson hasn't carried the ball in a preseason game since he returned from knee surgery in 2012, and his only exhibition game appearance during that time came in 2013, when he played one series in the Vikings' third preseason game against San Francisco, the story said. The piece also added that Zimmer doesn't feel it's necessary to see Peterson in a preseason game before the regular season starts.
