Rams trade RB Zac Stacy to the Jets

The St. Louis Rams traded Zac Stacy to the New York Jets in exchange for the 224th pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. Stacy requested a trade after the Rams drafted Georgia's Todd Gurley in the first round on Thursday night.

Stacy will vie for playing time in a crowded Jets backfield, which also features Chris Ivory, Stevan Ridley and Bilal Powell. Similar in skill set as a downhill chain-mover, Stacy will provide insurance in case Ridley suffers a setback in his return from ACL surgery.

Fantasy Impact: 

Touches in the Jets' backfield are seemingly up for grabs. The acquisition of Stacy looks like another vote of "no confidence" in the quite-capable Chris Ivory.

The move has the potential to be a game-changer for the Rams' offense, which took a player many consider the best running back to come out of college since Adrian Peterson. Todd Gurley should step right in and form one of the fastest, dynamic tandems in the NFL with Tre Mason, who showed flashes in his rookie season.

One player not happy the Rams added a first-round stallion to their crowded backfield is Zac Stacy. The running back who rushed for 973 yards as a rookie in 2013 tweeted (and deleted) "yikes" after the Gurley pick.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported early Friday morning that Stacy has requested to be traded and the Rams are shopping him, per a sourced involved.

Fantasy Impact: 

Stacy is clearly on the outs in St. Louis. He was a starter heading into the 2014 season, but lost his job to Mason and now finds himself third on the depth chart once Gurley returns from his ACL injury.

Fisher on Rams' RBBC: 'We may settle into something this week.'

During his career in Tennessee, Fisher usually had one running back carry most of the load. With the Rams, it's been more of a committee approach, although Zac Stacy settled into the main role for the final 12 games of the 2013 season.

This year, Stacy had 66 carries, Benny Cunningham 40 and rookie Tre Mason 30. Mason had had all his attempts in the last three games after being inactive for the first four games of the season.

Fisher hinted it could change. He said, "When they got their opportunities they all were productive. The average per carry is about the same. We'll see. We may settle into something this week."

Fantasy Impact: 

Reading between the lines, it sounds as if this committee could clear up this week, though a bad matchup with the 49ers doesn't help. We'd recommend that Mason owners hold another week to see if Fisher is referring to a scenario where the rookie is in the lead role. Despite what Fisher says, his YPC (5.2) is a good bit more than those of Benny Cunningham (4.1) and Zac Stacy (3.9), though the rookie is not trustworthy in pass protection.

Rams Beat: Tre Mason will be given 'every opportunity to develop a hot hand'

Most likely, Rams RB Tre Mason will be given every opportunity to develop a hot hand vs. the Chiefs after his eye-opening display against Seattle. He brings a speed element and a higher potential for the explosive play than Zac Stacy and Benny Cunningham.

“(Mason) certainly played well last week,” OC Brian Schottenheimer said. “Popped a couple big runs. Some of it is that they haven’t seen him. Now teams get a better idea of what he’s about.

“I think there’s some things he needs to do, taking care of the football. Obviously that last play was a little scary, but wow, what a talented young man.”

Fantasy Impact: 

This is our feeling too, despite Jeff Fisher's comments that Zac Stacy could see 25 carries this week. Mason showed more pop than either Stacy or Benny Cunningham, who now has a mild knee issue. Mason isn't a safe start, but he has upside in a so-so matchup against the Chiefs.
