Scouting report

LAR WR Van Jefferson - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Seattle Seahawks

Van Jefferson looks like he'll be the WR1 in Cooper Kupp's absence. He wasn't on the field much to start 2022. Over the last ten weeks of the season, he averaged 4.4 targets, and 2.4 receptions for 36.9 yards. It was a tough go, even though he barely overlapped with Kupp last season. It remains to be seen if he can earn targets at a high-enough rate to be fantasy relevant.

We currently have him ranked as WR39 in our projections. He's a desperation WR3 or Flex option if you're really in a bind, but you likely have better options on your roster.

LAR WR Van Jefferson - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Los Angeles Chargers

The Rams’ offense finally showed life in Week 16 with a big performance vs. a usually strong Denver Broncos defense. However, this strong performance didn’t translate to a lot of production for top wide receiver Van Jefferson. Jefferson continues to lead the team in routes and did see the second-most targets on the team with five. The issue is he was only able to produce three receptions for 19 yards on those five targets. This shouldn’t be much of a surprise as the Broncos’ strength on defense is the play of their outside cornerbacks Patrick Surtain II and Kareem Jackson.

Heading into Week 17 Jefferson will have another tough test vs. the Los Angeles Chargers. The Chargers have allowed the eight fewest receptions and the fifth-fewest receiving yards to wide receivers this season. This includes holding down notable wide receivers Michael Pittman (4-39) and Jaylen Waddle (2-31) over the past few weeks. Overall, Jefferson does see the route participation to pop up for a solid game here and there, but vs. another tough secondary, he’s best viewed as a WR4 in Week 17.

LAR WR Van Jefferson - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Denver Broncos

The Rams wide receiver core has taken another hit as they just lost starting wide receiver Ben Skowronek for the remainder of the year. This means that the Rams now will be down all three starting wide receivers from the beginning of the season. In theory, this should continue to open more opportunities for Van Jefferson. Jefferson has played the WR1 role over the past four weeks, but it has turned into much production due to issues at quarterback. During that stretch, Jefferson has averaged four targets turning them into 2.3 receptions for 36 yards per game. Jefferson has found the end zone twice but overall has underwhelmed as the defacto number one receiver in this offense.

This week Jefferson will get another tough test vs. a very strong Denver Broncos secondary. The Broncos this season rank 22nd in receptions, 32nd in yards, and 31st in touchdowns allowed to wide receivers in 2022. This has led them to allow a league-low 15 fantasy points per game to the position. This matchup along with the overall struggles of this passing offense makes Jefferson a fade in Week 16.

LAR WR Van Jefferson - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Green Bay Packers

Since the injuries to both Cooper Kupp and Allen Robinson, Van Jefferson has paced the team in routes and looked to be taking over as the WR1 rest of the season. However, in Week 14 with new quarterback Baker Mayfield, Jefferson took a backseat to both Ben Skowronek and Tutu Atwell. In that game, Jefferson only saw four targets turning them into 2-44-1. This performance was highlighted by a game-winning touchdown grab late in the fourth quarter but falling to third in targets is worth watching moving forward. This week the Rams will take on the Packers who have allowed the 10th most points to outside wide receivers over the past six weeks. Even though the underlying usage is there in a plus matchup, we are still unsure who is going to emerge as Mayfield’s top option moving forward. This makes Jefferson along with any Rams wide receiver a risky play in any format in Week 15.

LAR WR Van Jefferson - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Las Vegas Raiders

The post-Matthew Stafford, Cooper Kupp, and Allen Robinson era has been bleak for the passing offense in Los Angeles. Through two games, Van Jefferson leads the team in routes (64) and targets (10). Meanwhile, players like Tutu Atwell and Brandon Powell lead the team in receiving yards with (71) and (six) respectively. It seems that the Rams have spread the ball around as they look to generate offense with their top two weapons out. The silver lining is Jefferson is second on the team in both receptions and receiving yards and looks to have emerged as the go-to guy.

This week Jefferson does have a chance to be a WR4 as the Rams take on the Las Vegas Raiders. The Raiders’ defense has struggled as of late verse wide receivers after a strong start to the season. Over the past five weeks, the Raiders have allowed eight wide receivers to hit double-digit fantasy points and four over 20 points in PPR. We do suggest looking elsewhere, if possible, but if you’re struggling due to the bye weeks, Jefferson isn’t a terrible option for Week 14.

LAR WR Van Jefferson - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. Seattle Seahawks

Due to the injuries of Cooper Kupp and Allen Robinson, Van Jefferson has emerged as the top option for the Rams’ passing attack. In two games as the leading receiver, Jefferson has caught 6-70-1. The Rams have yet to name a starting quarterback for Week 13 so we should take two different mindsets on Jefferson based on who the quarterback ends up being. If backup quarterback John Wolford gets the start, then Jefferson does have some appeal as a WR4 option in deeper leagues as Wolford did throw for over 200 yards in his start earlier this year. If Perkins gets the nod, it will be tough to trust Jefferson as the Rams will go more run-heavy with Perkins under center. The good news for Jefferson is with Robinson already on IR and Kupp looking doubtful the rest of the season, Jefferson should continue to get plenty of playing time. That means if Stafford comes back, he could be a WR3 down the stretch.

LAR WR Van Jefferson - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at Kansas City Chiefs

One of the biggest surprises from the post Cooper Kupp usage in Week 11 was Van Jefferson playing in the slot. Jefferson saw 15 routes (48%) and tied Tyler Higbee with the team lead with three targets and two receptions from the inside. Also, Jefferson did pass up fellow wide receiver Ben Skowronek for second on the team in wide receiver routes only running two less than Allen Robinson on the day. This usage is a great sign for Jefferson’s rest-of-season outlook as playing more on the inside could help him see more consistent targets down the stretch. All of this comes with the caveat that Matthew Stafford and/or John Wolford return to start at some point soon. If that does happen, Jefferson could find himself on the WR3 map in plus matchups.
