RB Tim Hightower nearly benched for Ryan Torain

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said that he's "got a lot of belief in Ryan Torain." He also said they were ready to pull Tim Hightower on Monday night because he kept slipping.

If Hightower did not produce or stay on his feet during Washington's third quarter touchdown drive, he would have been done and Torain would have been in.

Fantasy Impact: 

And once again, Mike Shanahan is making a mess of a backfield. Torain is supposed to be third on the depth chart behind Hightower and Roy Helu, but he's always been a Shanahan favorite. It's just further proof that Hightower could be bounced out of the lineup at some point. Torain is worth a speculative addition if you have deep rosters. Helu's stock drops slightly as a result of this news.

Beanie Wells opens it up at practice, still limited

Cardinals RB Beanie Wells did more at practice Thursday, even “opening it up” a little to test his bad left hamstring, but he was still limited. Saying he has never had a hamstring injury before, Wells is expecting to be able to play Sunday.

“It sucks, but it’s a hamstring – what are you going to do about it,” Wells said. “I couldn’t have avoided it in any type of way.

“I sat out last week to make sure I’d be safe for this week.”

Whisenhunt said he was “optimistic” Wells would be able to play.

Fantasy Impact: 

The Giants bottled up both Tim Hightower and Carnell Williams before getting worked over by LeSean McCoy to the tune of 128 yards on 24 carries. It's not a great matchup for Wells, though he deserves RB2/flex consideration if he is a full go.

Roy Helu’s success last week gives Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan confidence in the rookie, but it doesn’t guarantee a similar timeshare every game.

“It all depends on the flow of the game and how things are going,” Shanahan said. “I think we obviously will be more encouraged to get [Helu] in there more. But it’s just a feel with how Tim Hightower is doing, what the defense is doing and how the game goes. There’s not a lot of consistency with it. But when you have those backs and you’ve got Ryan Torain, three guys we feel are capable of being starters, you really can’t make a wrong decision.

Redskins HC Mike Shanahan said he’s not about to start monitoring Tim Hightower’s carries, just to prevent a high total by season’s end. Hightower carried a career-best 25 times Sunday.

“Most coaches, you’re never thinking he has too many carries and it’s halfway through the game and I don’t want him to be tired a month from now,” Shanahan said. “You’ll do whatever you can do win the game.”
