Despite the injuries of WR Steve Smith (foot) and RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle), Panthers head coach Ron Rivera doesn’t believe any of his key starters will miss Week 1 notes the Charlotte Observer.

“There are injuries to heal, though nothing serious enough that Rivera is suggesting a key player could miss the opening game.”

Fantasy Impact: 

Smith is expected to return to practice on Sunday so as long as he doesn't suffer a setback, you can safely start him Week 1.

Panthers say Steve Smith does not have staph infection

Coach Ron Rivera said Tuesday receiver Steve Smith remains unable to put weight on the foot. The good news, per Rivera, is that the infection has “gotten much better.”

The lingering nature of the condition has created speculation that Smith may have had a staph infection. During the weekly Wednesday morning PFT visit with The Mac Attack on WFNZ in Charlotte, co-host Chris McClain said that he received an email from a Panthers source indicating that Smith did not have a staph infection.

Fantasy Impact: 

While it's good news that Smith is getting better, it's still alarming that he's unable to put weight on the foot. His mobility should come back quickly once the infection is gone.

Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart and wide receiver Steve Smith are both day-to-day, GM Marty Hurney said.

Stewart sprained his ankle late in the second quarter against the New York Jets on Sunday night. He was carted off the field after hobbling to the sideline, and x-rays after the game were negative. Head coach Ron Rivera said after the game Stewart will not play Thursday against the Pittsburgh Steelers

Smith did not make the trip north with the team, instead staying home to nurse a foot infection that has sidelined him for a week. He will likely not participate Thursday, as well.
