Draft note
by John Paulsen
There is little information about the knee injury that knocked Williams out after Week 9, but at that point, the rookie had more catches (32), yards (428) and targets (60) than fifth-year breakout star DeVante Parker. Since 2000, it was the 41st-most receiving yards by a rookie in his first eight games. The Dolphins are likely to experience change at quarterback, but Williams’s recovery should be monitored. He’s likely to be much cheaper than Parker on draft day.

MIA WR Preston Williams - 2020 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Preston Williams was the Dolphins’ leading receiver in 2019 before his injury. He entered as an undrafted rookie and left with a solid 32-428-3 stat line in eight games. He showed enough promise to earn a starting role outside of DeVante Parker for 2020. He’s a tall (6'5) target with great athleticism, and has enough talent to produce WR2 numbers.

Fantasy Downside
The obvious downside to Williams is the fact he tore his ACL last season, and his recovery is somewhat questionable. The Miami Herald reports Williams should be ready by the start of the season, but we won’t truly know until that point comes. Williams’ role also took a bit of a hit with Parker’s breakout season in 2019.

2020 Bottom Line
If Williams is able to go by Week 1 with no problems, he could be a steal. His ADP is extremely low right now as fantasy owners are concerned about his health situation. While his numbers don’t scream elite talent, he does show high upside. And he’s in a good role with an improved quarterback in Tua Tagovailoa. Williams’ health is worth monitoring, but he’s not a bad player to take a late-round flier on.
