Ravens TE L.J. Smith remains sidelined with a hamstring strain. He has been working out in the pool at the team hotel after practice.

“We’re just being careful with it to make sure that I can play in the preseason game,” Smith said. “The best-case scenario is next week, middle to late portion of the week. You don’t want it to feel good and then go out there and push it and pull and it go back to ground zero. I’ll gradually build up.

“I’m not having any problems with the hernia or groin. That’s fine. The way I hurt it, it was just hot out there and I was running a lot and it just caught up with me. Luckily, it’s not a bad hamstring pull. It’s just a tweak.”

It was only 7 1/2 months ago that Eagles head coach Andy Reid insisted Brent Celek's huge performance against the Seahawks - six catches for 131 yards, a franchise record for tight ends - was essentially a fluke.

"There were times they didn't do a great job covering him," Reid said with a straight face.

So why, we all wondered, doesn't anybody ever do a lousy job covering starter L.J. Smith?

"L.J. attracts so much attention," Reid said that day in early November. "L.J. is one of those guys that the other team is always aware of."

Now, the charade is over. Reid can stop pretending that Smith is better than Celek. He can stop pretending that Celek isn't the big-play tight end the Eagles expected Smith to become.

Tight end L.J. Smith was one of three players at his position who missed time with injuries during the Baltimore Ravens minicamps and OTAs.

Smith, who signed a one-year deal with the Ravens as a free agent, has battled nagging injuries from his days at Rutgers and all through his time with the Eagles.

The feeling here is, and always was, if he could ever just play a completely healthy season he would be the player the Eagles felt they drafted in the second round.
