Lance Dunbar in jeopardy of missing Week 1

Dallas running back Lance Dunbar suffered a sprained left foot that could keep him out of the Sept. 8 regular-season opener against the New York Giants.

Dunbar is in a protective boot and could need 3-4 weeks to return, according to a source. Dunbar had a 43-yard catch against Arizona last Saturday but fumbled at the end of the play. He returned to the game and did not mention being hurt in the locker room after the 12-7 loss to the Cardinals.

Fantasy Impact:

Dunbar is expected to see third-down duties and back up starting RB DeMarco Murray. The story also reminded us that Murray's sprained foot last season caused him to miss six games last. Joseph Randle is next up on the depth chart and has played pretty well in preseason games thus far.

Dallas backup running back Lance Dunbar was impressive during offseason workouts.

Dunbar is a speedy back who could be used in third-down situations. Dunbar needs improvement on pass blocking, size could be an issue, yet, he's someone worth watching in training camp.

We're not saying he should become a starter if DeMarco Murray gets hurt again, but Dunbar should see more playing time than he did last season.

Dallas running back Phillip Tanner looked quicker and more explosive in the spring practices.

Tanner, a former Dallas Kimball standout, played his way onto the roster in 2011 as an undrafted player out of Middle Tennessee State. But in the last half of 2012, the Cowboys used him less and less as Lance Dunbar emerged, and it looked like Tanner was falling out of favor.

When the Cowboys drafted another running back, Oklahoma State’s Joseph Randle, and signed an undrafted back, Kendial Lawrence of Missouri, it only added to the perception.

Tanner said he put all that out of his mind.

“Coming in and working hard every day, working with the offensive line and jelling with my team is the big thing,” he said.

Fantasy Impact:

Randle will likely back up DeMarco Murray this season leaving Tanner and Dunbar to battle for the RB3 spot in camp.
